The Royal Family’s signature pomp and pageantry was on full display this week as the King and Queen welcomed the president and first lady of Nigeria to the UK for the first state visit of 2026.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his wife, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, were welcomed to Windsor by Prince William and Princess Kate on Wednesday, before being escorted to Windsor Castle where they met Charles and Camilla.

William and Kate joined the King and Queen on the dais for the inspection of the guards, where the Princess of Wales shared a sweet moment with Queen Camilla, showing the affection they have for each other.

As they greeted each other on the grounds of Windsor Castle, Kate and Camilla leaned in close and kissed each other’s cheeks, with a lip reader examining the heartfelt words they exchanged.

Speaking to the Daily Express, lip reader Nicola Hickling said she believes Kate opened the conversation with: “Good morning, how are you?”, before telling Camilla, “you look beautiful!”

Camilla looked sophisticated in a pink wool crepe dress by Fiona Clare and a pink beret shaped hat by Philip Treacy. She was also wearing the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Cartier flower clip pair of brooches, as crowds gathered on the streets of Windsor to watch the welcome.

Later in the evening, William and Kate strayed from tradition ahead of the state banquet. Ahead of each state banquet last year, the Prince and Princess of Wales would post a portrait to Instagram before the event commenced, giving royal fans a chance to catch an early glimpse of their outfits.

However, on Wednesday night, no such photo was posted, and instead the official Instagram account for the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a video with highlights from the glitzy evening.

William and Kate eventually posted the portrait, waiting 24 hours after the event to share the stunning photo. Many royal fans took to the comments to share their excitement over the photo, after being forced to wait a full day.

One person wrote: “Thank you so much! We were all expecting this portrait last night and we were sad to not see it since the ones last year were amazing. You both look absolutely gorgeous and elegant.”

Kate wore the Lover’s Knot Tiara and a long emerald gown with a high neckline and flowing skirt by British-Nigerian designer Andrew Gn, reflecting the colour of the Nigerian flag.
