A boy has been pulled from Sydney Harbour with serious injuries after a shark attack.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia “multiple resources” were sent to Rose Bay after reports of a suspected shark attack near Vaucluse’s Shark Beach at Nielsen Park about 4.20pm on Sunday.

NSW Police said in a statement the boy is believed to be 13 years old and he has sustained “serious leg injuries”, leaving him in a critical condition.

“The injuries are consistent with what is believed to have been a large shark,” police said.

“The beach has been closed and swimmers are advised to avoid swimming in the water at this time.”

Local residents reported seeing multiple emergency vehicles rush to Rose Bay’s Lyne Park, which was quickly cordoned off. The patient was transported by water to the site after a water police officer had applied two medical tourniquets.

A Careflight helicopter landed at the scene but the boy was eventually taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital by ambulance in a critical condition.

Nielsen Park and Shark Beach is a popular swimming location for families with netted and non-netted swimming areas. The beach was reopened to the public in December 2024 after years of delayed renovations.

The attack comes two years after a woman suffered significant injuries in a shark attack at Sydney Harbour’s Elizabeth Bay.
