Today I saw a clip that absolutely broke my heart of Alec. He’s 100-years-old, and I want to tell you a bit about Alec.

He joined the Royal Navy after promising his father he wouldn’t fight in the trenches after his dad witnessed the horrors of WW1.

He took part in the Arctic convoys to Russia. He played a vital role in the D-Day landings.

The man is a hero. And then on Good Morning Britain today, Adil Ray decided to press him a little bit further, didn’t he?

Alec said: “My message is, I can see in my mind’s eye the rows and rows of white stones of all the hundreds of my friends and everybody else that gave their lives for what?

“The country of today. No, I’m sorry, the sacrifice wasn’t worth the result that it is now.”

Adil Ray asked Alec: “What do you mean by that, though?”

We all know what he means.

This story has brought me to tears. Patrick Christys, you have put the emotions of the country into words. Today, I remember Robert P. Sharrock. He was my mother’s first husband. They met in 1942, got married, and two weeks later, he shipped out to the far East. He was a glider pilot. In March 1943, he was shot down in Burma, in a battle helping the British. His name is in the book in St. Paul’s, with the names of other American servicemen and women who died supporting the British in battle. Had Bob Sharrock been alive now, I think he would have agreed with Alec Penstone and perhaps added, why did we bother?

In the last 24 hours 1,000 illegal immigrants crossed the English Channel. They’ll be in nice hotel rooms soon, ready for a life on benefits.
