Prince William confided in a senior courtier just how devastating his public split from the Princess of Wales was before they married. In a new tell-all biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, it is revealed how William called off his four-year relationship with Kate in 2007 after she delivered him an ultimatum to commit to their future or she would be the one to walk away.

In the fourth and final part of our exclusive serialsation, Myers offers new context around the Prince and Princess of Wales’s split and how the late Queen intervened in a moment that changed the course of royal history. After striking up a romance at St Andrew’s University, they called off their relationship in early 2007, with the book revealing that William personally instructed Clarence House to confirm the news that they were no longer an item.

And after the split, the biography explains how William then told a courtier, “at least she is free” before he then started to wonder whether he was taking the right course of action.

It comes as it is also revealed that Queen Elizabeth II played a key role in bringing the Prince and Princess of Wales back together after their heartbreaking split, telling her grandson to have faith in his relationship. The late Queen summoned William to a private meeting shortly after he announced in 2007 that he and Catherine had separated, urging him to follow his heart and marry the future queen.

For the first time, it can be revealed how William’s grandmother convinced him to rekindle his love and also how the Queen gave Kate advice on dealing with the pressures of “headstrong husbands” and a future role as a senior member of the royal family.
