A man has been shot dead by police after a woman was stabbed in a rampage that saw him allegedly break into several houses and carjack a vehicle. The man reportedly forced his way into the woman’s house armed with a chainsaw and knife on Friday morning, February 6.

A critical incident investigation is underway after the series of events unfolded in the early hours in New South Wales in Australia. Police officers were called to a home on Heath Avenue, Tuncurry, just over three hours from Sydney, to reports of the home invasion.

When on their way to the scene, the force were told that a woman had been stabbed and a man had fled the property in a white four wheel drive.

At the home, officers located a 28-year-old woman with serious wounds. She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police spotted the four-wheel drive [4WD] vehicle shortly after on nearby Stewart Parade and initiated a pursuit. In the car chase, the vehicle drove through a sports ground before reportedly crashing on the Forster Bridge.

Police rushed to the bridge and located the 4WD but were told the man had carjacked another vehicle which subsequently rammed a police vehicle. An officer sustained minor injuries.

The pursuit continued to Idlewood Drive in Rainbow Flat where the man drove onto a property and entered a home, still armed with a knife, before attempting to steal another vehicle.

He exited the home moments later and confronted police, which saw officers use a taser in an attempt to detain the man. However, he ran to another property.

A taser was deployed multiple times before the armed man ran towards an officer who shot at him. He was issued first aid by the officers but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, is believed to be 41-years-old.

A critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
