An Australian woman has been killed in a ski lift accident at a popular snow resort in Japan.
Police in Japan confirmed to ABC News the woman’s name is Brooke Day, who is from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
The 22-year-old was taking a lift at the Tsugaike Mountain Resort in central Japan on Friday morning when she became caught and suffered critical injuries.
Resort chief executive Tsuneo Kubo said the woman’s backpack got caught in the lift carriage, causing her to be dragged along with the lift after she disembarked.
“Staff subsequently pressed the stop button to halt the lift,” Mr Kubo said in a statement.
“Prompt rescue efforts were undertaken, and the customer was transported by ambulance.”

Local police confirmed the woman died in hospital later on Friday.
An earlier statement from Mr Kubo said the woman was rushed to hospital “in a condition believed to be cardiac arrest”.
He said the company was complying with police investigations.
“We will continue to cooperate fully with the police and relevant authorities in their investigations, while simultaneously working to establish a safer operational framework,” Mr Kubo said.
“This lift will only resume operation once all investigations are complete and measures to prevent recurrence have been fully implemented.”
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs said it was providing consular assistance to the woman’s family.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.
“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”
