The Princess of Wales said she has been “blown away” by the generous donations in support of her Three Peaks challenge, as she discussed the preparations involved with hiking the highest mountains in the UK. Catherine completed the gruelling climbs of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 24 hours at the end of June to raise money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, where she received treatment in 2024.

Her aim was to “explore life beyond diagnosis” and told former tennis star Tim Henman that doing the challenge for such a good cause “keeps you going through the hard times”. She chatted to the former British number one as they attended a match at Wimbledon last week, and told him that she encountered heavy downpours.

“The weather was atrocious,” Catherine told him. “I mean, everybody got soaked through, but it was a very sort of stoically British thing to do. You know, you’re soaking wet, and everyone’s going ‘come on, we can do it’.”

Last Thursday, the future queen attended the fourth day of Wimbledon to watch Briton Arthur Fery play his second-round match against Otto Virtanen and sat alongside the chairwoman of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) Deborah Jevans and former British tennis number one Henman.

In a short, special edition of Overheard at Wimbledon – a series shared on social media that captures audience comments and reactions during the tennis tournament – Catherine was recorded discussing her experience of the Three Peaks Challenge with the pair.

Henman asks what the preparation involved, with the princess replying: “I did it in 24 hours, yeah.

“That was the challenge anyway, I think, but I think part of the journey was trying to enjoy the process, like the training beforehand, but also making time … during the walk to meet people and enjoy the journey, rather than just actually just quickly getting to the top.”

When Henman asked whether she completed the challenge to support a charity, Kate said: “Yes, it was for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

“I’ve just been so blown away by all the donations and all things. Everyone’s been so generous. That’s what keeps you going, it’s when you know you’re doing it for a good cause. Keeps you going through the hard times.”

Several pictures of her being greeted by her family, including her parents, her husband and three children, at the conclusion of the challenge have been shared by Kensington Palace.

Catherine surprised members of the public with her visit to Wimbledon last week, handing out tickets to attendees and taking card payments at the entrance to the prestigious tennis event. She frequently stopped to chat and some fans were left puzzled when pictures appeared to show the princess wearing a microphone clipped under the left side of her jacket.

The release of the video now explains why Catherine had been wearing the device: to record her conversations with the former British number one and the AELTC chair.
