In the latest extract from Tom Bower’s upcoming book Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, he claimed that Harry ‘complained’ that he had been ‘abandoned’

Prince Harry is said to have complained about being “abandoned”, among other things, after he decided to “risk assassination” to travel back to the UK with Meghan Markle for an event to “sustain her brand”.

Just two years after leaving the UK to move to California, Harry and Meghan returned in September 2022 on a trip where Meghan gave a speech at the One Young World charity conference. But just days before the trip, Harry is said to have “complained” about having been “abandoned,” according to royal author Tom Bower.

In an extract from his upcoming book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, the journalist claims Harry was “stressed about their security” having been told “the Home Office refused to provide armed protection in Manchester and London”. But, Bower claims, Harry still “decided to ‘risk assassination’,” to join his wife on the trip.

In the latest exerpt, serialised in The Times, Bower claims that he made the decision after “Meghan’s insistence that her appearance was essential to sustain her brand”. Bower went on to claim that “a whole rail carriage was reserved for the journey from London to Manchester”.

“Although the public would be barred from access to the ‘royal carriage’, Harry later complained about the dangers he faced ‘because of his proximity to the public’,” writes Bower. He claims that Harry “clapped with what was now arguably his perma-scowl”, as his wife took to the stage to speak.

Bower goes on to say that when Harry returned to the UK in September 2025, he “planned to promote himself as the smiling, generous royal serving the people”. He continues: “To this end, he gifted £1.1million to Children in Need and, unusually for a royal, advertised his donation.

“To some, it appeared as mitigration money. His only gripe was the absence of police protection. Once again, he urged the Home Secretary to reconsider.”

In response to previous exerpts from the book, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a scathing statement. A representative said: “Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation.

“This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself. He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him… in The – once respected – Times.”
