A YOUNG couple’s dream kayaking getaway ended in heartbreak after they were found dead in waters off an island known locally as “Death’s Door.”
David Thalman, 20, and girlfriend Francesca Warick, 20, disappeared during a trip near Washington Island in Wisconsin before an extensive search ended with the recovery of both of their bodies.

The pair, who were visiting the island from Illinois, were reported missing on August 1 after they failed to return from a kayaking trip.
Police said they had gone out on the water without life jackets.
A huge search operation involving local authorities, the US Coast Guard, drones and rescue crews was launched as teams scoured the waters for the missing couple.
The Coast Guard suspended its search on Sunday morning, after which the Door County Sheriff’s Office took over and the mission became a recovery effort.
Crews found Thalman’s body at around 10.55am on Monday before recovering Warick’s body a short time later.
The sheriff’s office said the deaths were drownings, although the incident remains under investigation and officials have not yet released an official cause or manner of death.
Washington Island lies off the northeastern tip of Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, where the surrounding waters have earned the chilling nickname “Death’s Door.”
The dangerous passage between the island and the mainland is notorious for strong currents, unpredictable winds, rocky shores and shifting sandbars, with more than 275 shipwrecks believed to have occurred in the area.
Warick, from South Elgin was remembered by loved ones as a competitive cheerleader who loved travelling and was studying cosmetology with hopes of becoming a mother.
Her obituary said: “Above all else, Francesca loved her parents, Anthony and Angela, with all her heart.
“She always tried to make others laugh, lifted the spirits of those around her, and chose to see the best in people. Her loving heart, joyful spirit, and genuine kindness will forever be remembered.”
Thalman, from Dundee, had chosen to skip college and launch a career in real estate immediately after high school.
His obituary described him as someone with “warmth and gentle strength,” while his boss, Jane Lee, said he stood out from the moment they met.
“He said, ‘Jane, anything you can offer me, I want to learn real estate. I want to make it really big in the real estate business,’” Lee recalled.
She said she later asked whether he planned to attend college.
“I said, ‘Do you want to go to college?’ He said, ‘No. My friends go to college. They’re not doing well. They’re partying all the time. I want to build a career.’”
Lee hired Thalman for inside sales at her RE/MAX office shortly after he graduated from high school, but said he quickly earned a promotion to transaction manager thanks to his work ethic.
“When people have a sports background, they have a very strong mind. Very hustle,” she said, referring to his time as a high school football player.
She added that clients regularly praised his professionalism, saying: “You don’t see a lot of young people like that anymore today. He’s very focused, always on time. We trust him 100 percent.”
According to Lee, the couple had been staying at Thalman’s family cabin on Washington Island when the tragedy unfolded.
She said they spoke before he left for the trip and became concerned when he stopped responding to messages over the weekend.
“If I text him, in a second I got a response,” she said.
“When several calls went unanswered Saturday afternoon, she initially thought he had lost phone service while hiking, but by Sunday morning she knew something was wrong.
“That moment I did worry,” Lee said, after Thalman’s mother called to tell the office he and Warick had gone missing.
The devastating news left the entire office reeling.
“We all cried,” Lee said. “Everybody was in shock.”
She added: “We told our customers he was gone. People called and cried to us.”
Lee said Thalman had already planned to spend five years learning every aspect of the business before becoming a realtor in his own right.
“One day he said, ‘Jane, I’m going to become you one day,’” she recalled.
Thalman’s final Facebook posts featured photos of himself with Warick, including a series of pictures shared last December alongside the caption: “My beautiful woman and I.”
