The British monarch encountered a comedian doing an impression of him during the first day of the royals’ U.S. state visit

King Charles and Queen Camilla met with dozens of guests during a massive garden party at the British embassy on the first day of their U.S. state visit. However, the King may not have been expecting to encounter a comedian doing an impression of him!

Standing in the receiving line next to British Olympian Tom Daly and White House reporter Kaitlan Collins was Matt Friend, a political comedian and impressionist who hosts the show America Laughs on CNN.

As he got his moment to shake hands with King Charles, Friend leaned in and attempted his best version of the sovereign’s posh British accent.

“I’m going to do my impersonation of you, that’s not bad,” he said. “I’m trying to sound like you.”

The King, 77, was visibly amused by the attempt and, with a classic British dry wit, told the comedian, “Keep trying!”

“Thank you very much,” Friend replied. He later posted about the moment on social media, writing, “King Charles meets King Charles!”

Another fun, off-the-cuff moment during the garden party came when a group of West Point cadets cheekily asked Queen Camilla, 78, to pose for a photo with them.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was in attendance at the garden party and said the King was “very personable.”

“You can tell that he gets along well and enjoys these events, and takes it all in his stride,” he added.

The King is set to deliver an address to a joint meeting of Congress. He will be just the second-ever British monarch to address Congress after his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, delivered a speech at the Capitol in 1991.

Johnson also said he spoke with the King about his historic speech to Congress, happening on Tuesday, April 28, and promised he will be “very well received.”

“It’s something everyone is excited about. It’s an historical event, and it’s exciting that it falls on our anniversary year,” he said.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will then join President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump for a state dinner at the White House on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, April 30, they will travel to New York City for a series of engagements, including a stop to mark the upcoming 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The royals are then set to travel south to Virginia to meet local residents and community organizations. They will also attend a “block party” to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
