Even after all these years, it is hard not to see Buffy The Vampire Slayer‘s Spike as the best portrayal of vampires on television. However, the second-best depiction of vampires comes from a relatively obscure show that had a strong four-season run. Since both vampire characters in question are distinct in their own ways, comparing them would be a little unfair. Still, it is worth exploring how they creatively work around vampire tropes to deliver something unique.

Vampire characters are a dime a dozen on both the big and small screens. While some are portrayed as subtle metaphors of religious fanaticism in shows like Midnight Mass, others barely rise above conventional tropes in movie franchises like Twilight. Every once in a while, though, a show like Buffy the Vampire Slayer builds such a compelling lore around them that it becomes impossible to ignore how creatively they can be reimagined for the screen.

Just like Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains a fan favorite vampire character even after all these years, Cassidy from Preacher, too, deserves to be remembered as one of the most charismatic and memorable vampire characters of all time.

What Makes Preacher’s Cassidy A Great TV Vampire

It has almost become tiring to see vampires as sparkly romantics or brutal monsters. Thankfully, in Preacher, Proinsias Cassidy is portrayed as a deeply human vampire who comes off as the anti-thesis of the polished, brooding archetype seen in mainstream portrayals. Instead of reducing him to well-worn tropes, Preacher portrays him as a morally conflicted man who spends way too much time worrying about his next drink.

Like most vampires, he is revealed to be alive for over a very long time, far longer than an average human’s lifespan. However, instead of making him wise, his suffering seems to have given him a foul mouth, a dark sense of humor, and a life full of a series of consequences of decades of poor choices and actions.

With his electric performance as the character, Joseph Gilgun steals the show every time he shows up on the screen. He perfectly nails his fast-talking, irreverent Irish wit while cleverly drawing satire about everything from The Big Lebowski to modern music.

Beyond his wit and charm, though, there is also something deeply tragic and relatable about Cassidy. The fact that he tries to control his own bloodthrist and almost always ends up ruining everything he touches makes him a painfully flawed figure. While he has many “anti-heroic” aspects, he tries to do the right thing and even his committed friendship with Jesse Custer and Tulip O’Hare makes him more rootable.

Although Cassidy’s screen time is limited, he ends up becoming more layered than most mainstream vampire characters from both movies and TV shows. This easily makes him one of the greatest vampire characters of all time.

Cassidy Doesn’t Get As Much Attention As Buffy’s Spike, But Probably Should

Played by James Marsters, Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Spike is a household name and is still remembered as one of the most beloved characters from the series. Unfortunately, even though Cassidy is no less compelling as a vampire in Preacher, he seems lesser-known. One of the reasons behind this is that even though Preacher lasted for four seasons, it is not as popular as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Spike also got an incredible redemption arc in the series, while Cassidy remains pretty much the same throughout Preacher‘s runtime. Even in terms of tone, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its portrayal of Spike’s journey are more accessible for the masses because the show balances its darker elements with hopeful story arcs.

Preacher, in contrast, remains bleak and gritty throughout its runtime, preventing it from giving characters like Cassidy true redemptive arcs. Owing to this, Preacher, as a show, may not be for everyone, and many viewers may not even appreciate Cassidy as a vampire. However, he still deserves to rank among some of the best vampire characters, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Spike, and be remembered as one of the better-written TV vampires.
