A young man putting petrol in his car has been killed in an alleged hit-and-run on an Australian freeway.
The 22-year-old was standing beside his ute when he was allegedly struck in the northbound lanes of the Mitchell Fwy between Hepburn and Whitfords avenues in Padbury, Perth.
Emergency services raced to help about 7.20pm on Sunday but he could not be saved.
Police allege 30-year-old Michael Kane was behind the wheel and have accused him of driving off before later turning himself into authorities.
The Iluka local appeared in Joondalup Magistrates Court charged with failing to stop and assist, and failing to report an incident to police.
A section of freeway was locked down for more than 13 hours as major crash investigators pieced together what happened.
Authorities say the devastating crash is a reminder to stay in your vehicle if you break down on the freeway.
The advice is to leave your seatbelt on and hazard lights activated.

The death was the fifth on WA roads in just three days.
“The fatality rate is both worrying and heartbreaking,” WA Labor Minister Simone McGurk said.
“I can’t imagine what those families are going through and my thoughts go to them.”
The accused was remanded in custody and is next due in court in July.
