When Elon Musk sits down with Joe Rogan, you know it’s not just another podcast — it’s a glimpse into the future. But this time, Musk may have gone further than ever before, leaving even the famously unflappable Rogan speechless with his latest prediction: the end of smartphones as we know them.
During a new episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO delved into the topic of human-technology integration — and what’s coming next. Rogan, half skeptical and half curious, pressed Musk on his long-discussed project Neuralink, the brain-implant interface designed to connect the human mind directly with computers.

“But it keeps coming up,” Rogan said, shaking his head. “I know I’ve asked you a couple of times — like this is bullshit, right?”
Musk just smiled — and then dropped the line that’s now blowing up across social media:
“Smartphones will eventually become obsolete. You won’t need to hold anything — you’ll just think, and it’ll happen.”
The comment sent shockwaves through the tech community. Musk explained that with Neuralink’s future versions, humans could communicate directly with devices — or even each other — without typing, talking, or touching a screen. “It’s not science fiction,” he said. “It’s evolution.”
According to Musk, the shift could happen sooner than people think, predicting that in a decade or less, physical devices like smartphones might feel as outdated as rotary phones do today.

“The phone is basically already an extension of you,” Musk explained. “It’s just that there’s a data bottleneck — you use your thumbs. Neuralink removes that bottleneck.”
Rogan sat back, wide-eyed. “That’s insane,” he said. “You’re talking about a world where people can literally think their messages into existence.”
To which Musk calmly replied, “Exactly.”
The conversation quickly went viral, sparking debates across X, Reddit, and YouTube about the implications — from the end of privacy as we know it, to the possibility of true human-AI fusion. Fans called the exchange “chilling,” “revolutionary,” and “the most mind-blowing podcast moment of the year.”
While Neuralink is still in its early stages, with human trials only beginning, Musk’s confidence is unwavering. For him, this isn’t just about convenience — it’s about survival.
“AI is moving faster than people realize,” he said. “If we don’t merge with it, we risk being left behind.”
Whether you find that thrilling or terrifying, one thing’s for sure: when Elon Musk talks about the future, the world listens.
So, if Musk is right, the next time you reach for your phone… enjoy it. Because one day soon, you might not need it at all.
