Midnight Oil drummer Rob Hirst has died, aged 70, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The legendary performer, who was described as “the engine driving one of the greatest live bands of all time”, was diagnosed with the disease in 2023.
“After fighting heroically for almost three years, Rob is now free of pain – ‘a glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness’,” his bandmates said on social media on Tuesday.
“He died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.”
Hirst had shared news of his illness in April 2025, saying he could not play the drums due to problems with his breathing.
“I wanted to get the story of pancreatic cancer out there, because it’s one of those cancers that most people don’t really register,” he said.
His death has shattered the music world, with tributes from fans and industry figures highlighting him as a “beast behind the kit”.
“Rob Hirst has had a massive impact on Australian culture,” rocker Jimmy Barnes said.
“He was the engine driving one of the greatest live bands of all time.
“Rest in peace, dear Rob.
“You are irreplaceable, one of a kind, and myself, my family, and all the rest of this great country will miss you so much.”
The Hoodoo Gurus said the world “has lost a great musician”.
“Your creativity, passion and joy has left its mark on all of us, and the strength of your spirit will be an inspiration forever,” the band said.“A life well lived.”

Hirst formed Midnight Oil in 1976 before the band went on to become one of the most prolific acts in Australian music history with hits like Beds Are Burning and The Power and The Passion.
Hirst, who also played with the Ghostwriters, Backsliders and the Angry Tradesmen, is survived by his wife Lesley Holland and three daughters.
Hirst’s family has asked people wanting to honour him to donate to Pankind — Pacreatic Cancer Australia, or music industry charity Support Act.
