A man who was brutalised in a horror shark attack was left “silenced from the pain”, one of his rescuers has said, as he was rushed to shore by rescuers, one of them has said.

The unnamed victim, in his late 20s, was bitten by a shark at North Steyne Beach near Manly in New South Wales, Australia, on Monday. Emergency services rushed to the scene just after 6pm following reports of the attack, during which the man was bitten on the leg. He was pulled from the water by rescuers before he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with severe lacerations.

One of those one the scene said he was surfing when the attack took place, and went into cardiac arrest after sustaining significant blood loss and being “silenced” by the excruciating pain of the injury.

Speaking to local publication the Manly Observer, the bystander said he and a friend picked up the bite victim after they pulled up alongside him on a surf board. They said: “A friend and I were in the surf and we were the only ones, and then a guy came in. He had just got out through the breakers, like when you first get to the lineup and sat on his board and we all gave a little smile and a wave.

“He was right next to us, 10 metres away. And he just got done. My mate put him on his board and was pushing him into shore and there was blood on the board and I was trying to pull them to help out.

“The guy was silenced from the pain, but still conscious, and I kept telling him to not look at his leg and we just kept paddling.” The rescuer added they immediately raised the alarm when they got to shore, just a matter of minutes before emergency services arrived at the scene.

They said: “We screamed at people on the beach to get a tourniquet. It was like 6:20pm or 6:30pm and the lifeguards were off duty. Some people came and grabbed him and took him to shore and I went back for my mate who was caught in a rip. When I got back to the beach, I ran up the beach, yelling at people to get the last lifesaver who was packing up and they ran over.

“And then someone ran over and I think she was a nurse and she knew what she was doing.” The surfer attack was one of several that took place in NSW over the weekend.

Australian publications reported that, on Sunday, a 12-year-old boy was left with serious leg injuries after he jumped from a ledge nearby Shark Beach in Sydney Harbour.

He lost both legs in the attack, and was only saved due to his two quick-thinking friends. Earlier on Monday, an 11-year-old boy’s surf board had a chunk bitten out of it by a shark – but he escaped without injury.
