An ‘unhinged’ and ‘twisted’ new film is winning rave reviews since its release to cinemas – and it stars an unrecognisable romcom legend.

Survival horror Send Help centres around two colleagues who find themselves stranded together on an island after a plane crash. Worker Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) finds herself trapped in paradise alongside her insufferable and sexist boss, Bradley Preston (Dylan O’Brien).

They must work together to survive their predicament, but with their relationship already on rocky ground before the incident, exactly who makes it out alive remains to be seen.

As McAdams takes on the resilient and often blood-spattered Linda, she looks worlds away from her breakout role as cruel schoolgirl Regina George in 2004 romcom Mean Girls.

Send Help is directed by Sam Raimi, known for his work on The Evil Dead trilogy as well as the Spider-Man films. This new release is the filmmaker’s first original, non-franchise flick in over 15 years.

In an interview with Radio Times, the director said he enjoyed watching audiences’ reactions to his trademark gore which is a staple in Send Help. He told the publication: “I love putting them to use to show what this character Linda Liddle has to go through to survive on this island… and it was fun tossing the blood again!”

It hit UK cinemas today (February 5) and has already received plenty of rave reviews. At time of writing, it boasts an impressive 93 per cent critics’ score, with an equally formidable 87 per cent rating from audiences.

One viewer penned: “I enjoyed it, but from the trailers, I thought it was going to be more of a Misery-style psychological horror, about this guy with a broken leg trapped at the mercy of an insane woman with complete power over him. It pretty quickly moved on from that and became more of a comedy-thriller-adventure with some guts and gore, but it was still fun.”

A second added: “It’s on the edge of your seat psychological horror with a decent amount of gore and room for a few good laughs,” while a third described the film as a “corporate take on Lord of the Flies.”

Another shared: “If you miss that very particular brand of Sam Raimi horror comedy, where you’re squirming, screaming, and laughing all at the same time, you achieve that over and over again with Send Help.”
