An alleged fugitive wanted over an outback shooting may be “actively avoiding” authorities and may have even slipped out of the state, police say.
It has been close to five full days since a woman was shot in the hand at a property near Mullewa, north of Perth, triggering a major response from emergency services about 5.30pm on Wednesday.
Despite the huge search effort there has been no confirmed sightings of Kenneth Giles, 58, since he drove east from the property on Urawa Rd and out into WA’s vast Mid West.
“We’re exploring all options including that he’s left the state,” Acting Superintendent Ben Huggett said at a press conference on Monday.
“We believe that he is most likely within Western Australia and still within [the] Mid West-Gascoyne [district] which is why we are concentrating our efforts extensively to this region.”

Beyond the Tactical Response Group, Police Air Wing and local police, authorities have drawn on the expertise of specialist teams to track down the experienced bushman with “strong survival skills”.
“He’s actively avoiding us, we believe,” Huggett said.
“That is a challenge.”
Police again appealed directly to Giles to come forward, making a point of assuring him that the injured woman was recovering well and no one else was hurt in the incident.
Huggett said a number of shots were fired during the altercation, which police are treating as a family domestic incident, and children were at the property at the time.
“Kenneth, if you are listening, if you are watching this, I urge you to contact police so that we can sort this out,” he said.
“This has gone on long enough.
“You must be uncomfortable out there, you must be anxious, which is why we want to help you end this safely and peacefully.”

A large number of cattle stations and farms have been looked over as part of the search and police have seized firearms from multiple properties as part of their investigation but say they are not necessarily linked to the incident.
Giles, who is believed to be armed, is thought to be travelling in a white Nissan Patrol ute with the registration 1BIY336.
Anyone who sees him is asked to contact police.
“It is a priority for us. We want to resolve this peacefully and again we call on the public to assist,” Huggett said.
