A “masterpiece” historical series is hailed by fans as “better” than Game of Thrones. Rome hit the small screen in 2005 and explores “the story of one of history’s greatest empires from its first major battle (the Barbarian Invasion of 114 BC), through its remarkable military feats, to its eventual fall”, the teaser intro for the film on Amazon Prime Video reads.

It stars Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson, Polly Walker, alongside an ensemble cast, and was created by John Milius, William J. MacDonald, and Bruno Heller. There were two series of the international co-production, the second of which aired in 2007. Fans have flocked to IMDb to laud the series, with one calling it a “masterpiece”. “Rome is a very detailed and historically accurate show that will keep you hooked throughout the series,” they wrote.

One person writing after the first series came out wrote: “This is TV of the highest order, of a quality equal to the best that Hollywood can produce.

“The emphasis is on character rather than action, but the action there is pulls no punches with plenty of gore. The story keeps one intrigued to the end.

“There may be historical liberties taken, but who cares, (and history is just story telling anyway), this is pure entertainment.”

The episodes have 15 and 18 certificates, so viewer discretion is advised.
