Chicago police said a man was shot and killed in a carjacking on Waveland Avenue in Lakeview Wednesday. There was also a deadly South Side shooting.

CHICAGO (WLS) — A man was shot and killed in a carjacking in Lakeview Wednesday morning, Chicago police said.

CPD responded to another deadly shooting shortly after on the South Side.

The first incident took place at about 3:49 a.m. in the 700-block of Waveland Avenue.

Police said a 22-year-old man and a 38-year-old man were both inside a parked vehicle when two armed male suspects approached.

The suspects demanded the victims’ vehicle and shot the 22-year-old man in the chest and back, police said. He was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The 38-year-old man was not injured, police said.

The suspects took the victims’ vehicle and fled in an unknown direction, police said.

Neighbors are concerned by the violence.

“It’s tough to live only a couple short blocks away and to see the reality,” one neighbor said. “This is supposed to be a safe neighborhood. I think for the most part it is. Every now and again you hear some wild stories.”

Even though business leaders ABC7 spoke to say they have their own in-house security, there’s still a sense of concern and caution among them after the crimes.

“If there’s any silver lining in a situation like that is that it brings everyone together, and refreshes everybody’s memory of the renewed sense to be proactive,” local nightclub manager Michael Solis said. “I literally was seeing both marked and unmarked police cars just kind of zipping into the corner.”

Solis says he arrived to work at his nearby nightclub around four Wednesday morning shortly after the shooting and carjacking.

“Some of the initiatives we’ve seen local community leaders put into place to combat things like that have really deterred a lot of that activity,” Solis said. “So, it was incredibly disheartening to see it, kind of, make its return to the area.”

And just 50 minutes later, CPD responded to another deadly shooting in the 3700 block of South Lake Park Avenue on the South Side.. Investigators said a man was found shot in the head and pronounced dead on scene.

At that scene was a car that matched the description of the vehicle stolen from Lakeview. It is not known if the two incidents are connected.

That location is where North Side business leaders, like Jerry Zea, were sifting through their own security footage in hopes it captured the carjacking suspects.

“My heart goes out to the families. I feel extremely sad because I live down the street,” Buzzed by Zea owner Jerry Zea said. “And so, I want to make sure that people understand that the neighborhood is alert and we are looking out for each other.”

Alderwoman Angela Clay of the 46th Ward declined to comment on the shooting. ABC7 has also reached out to 4th Ward Alderman Lamon Robinson, but have not heard back.
