In a groundbreaking moment for East African football, Mbwana Ally Samatta has officially joined Le Havre AC on a one-year deal, becoming the first-ever Tanzanian player to compete in France’s prestigious Ligue 1. The move marks not just a personal milestone for the 31-year-old striker, but a historic breakthrough for Tanzania’s presence in top-tier European football.

A Trailblazer for His Country
Samatta’s signing has sent waves of excitement across Tanzania, where football fans see him as a national hero and a pioneer. From humble beginnings in Dar es Salaam to the floodlights of European stadiums, Samatta’s journey is one of persistence, resilience, and breaking barriers.
His career began with Tanzanian side Simba SC before he rose to prominence at TP Mazembe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he won the CAF Champions League in 2015 and was crowned African Player of the Year (Based in Africa).
From there, Samatta made history again by becoming the first Tanzanian to play in the English Premier League, joining Aston Villa in 2020 after a prolific spell in Belgium with KRC Genk.
Why Le Havre?
Le Havre AC, one of France’s oldest football clubs, is building a squad with a mix of young talent and experienced professionals. Known for producing world-class players such as Paul Pogba, Riyad Mahrez, and Benjamin Mendy, the club sees Samatta as both a leader and a finisher who can inspire its young forwards.
Sporting Director Pierre Wantiez praised the move, saying:
“Samatta brings a wealth of experience from some of the world’s most competitive leagues. His leadership and professionalism will be invaluable in helping us meet our Ligue 1 ambitions.”
A New Challenge in a New League
For Samatta, Ligue 1 offers a fresh opportunity to prove himself after stints in England, Belgium, and Turkey. Known for his work rate, aerial ability, and knack for scoring in crucial matches, he will now be tasked with adapting to the tactical and physical demands of French football.
Speaking after signing the deal, Samatta expressed his excitement:
“I am proud to represent Tanzania at this level. Playing in Ligue 1 is a dream and I hope to inspire young players back home to believe that anything is possible.”
What This Means for Tanzanian Football
Samatta’s arrival in France could open doors for more Tanzanian players to be scouted by European clubs. His success story has already inspired a generation of aspiring footballers in East Africa, and his latest chapter with Le Havre only raises the bar higher.
Football analysts believe that if Samatta performs well, Ligue 1 scouts may turn their attention to untapped East African talent pools.
Looking Ahead
Le Havre fans are eager to see if their new striker can deliver goals and guide the club to a strong finish in the 2025 Ligue 1 season. For Tanzania, every appearance he makes in the French top flight will be another proud reminder that a boy from Dar es Salaam can stand tall among Europe’s best.
