NEED TO KNOW
A new two-line obituary evades any pleasantries about Amy Steadman, the late grandmother accused of fatally poisoning herself, her daughter and her four grandchildren last week in upstate New York
The terse obituary comes as the children’s grieving father has alleged he holds his late estranged ex-wife to blame alongside Steadman
Police have yet to release more information about the alleged murder-suicide, which was discovered on Tuesday, June 23, in Mechanicville, New York
A brief obituary with little to say about a grandmother accused of intentionally poisoning and killing herself, her daughter, and her four grandchildren has raised eyebrows one week after police made the gruesome discovery inside an upstate New York home.
The shocking scene in Mechanicville, N.Y. was discovered just before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, after neighbors contacted Mechanicville Police once they grew concerned that they hadn’t seen the family who lived there for several days.
Police have not yet identified a motive behind the alleged murder-suicide or confirmed the cause of death for any of the six people found dead, but have named 64-year-old grandmother Amy Steadman as the accused suspect.
PEOPLE previously reported that Mechanicville Chief of Police William Rabbitt announced that investigators believe the grandmother carried out an “intentional poisoning” that killed her, her 44-year-old daughter Sarah Myers, and her four grandchildren: Harper Harmon, 13, Hudson Harmon, 11, and twins Gavin Harmon and Gracelynn Harmon, both 10.
“There is recovered evidence inside the apartment to indicate intentional poisoning to include numerous persons and over the counter medications,” the police chief said at a news conference held on Thursday, June 25.
Chief Rabbitt added that “evidence recovered during the investigation, including a handwritten note and other circumstantial evidence, strongly suggest that Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths.”
In the week since, differing accounts have emerged about the bitter custody battle that took place in the prior years between the children’s mother and estranged father Brady Harmon, who lives in Utah.

Meanwhile, a terse obituary for Steadman avoided any pleasantries. The two-line obituary for Steadman simply read: “Amy J. Steadman, 64, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Per the request of the family, services were held privately.”
An obituary for Myers, however, described her as “a devoted mother who loved her children” and “cared for them with the utmost devotion and love.”
But in recent days, Harmon, the children’s father, has said in several interviews that he personally places blame on Myers for their children’s death.
Local WNYT reported that weeks before her death, Myers shared a now-deleted GoFundMe that alleged she was a survivor of domestic violence and that she needed to raise money for legal and travel fees in connection with the custody dispute with Harmon.
Harmon told The Times Union that he had not seen his children since 2019 amid a custody battle between him and Myers. He told the newspaper he was supposed to finally see his children during a court ordered 60-day visitation scheduled to begin July 1.
“I went from I’m seeing my kids to I’ll never see my kids again,” Harmon told the newspaper. “Hope to hell. Things happen, but nothing like this.”
The grieving father also told the Times Union that he plans to bury his four children in Utah, adding: “I want them as far away as possible from their mother.”
In an interview with Spectrum News 1, Harmon told the outlet point blank: “It’s my speculation [Steadman and Myers] did that together,” adding that he believes his children were murdered “because they were going to spend 60 days with me.”
However, John Bauman, another ex-husband of Myers, backed up her character while speaking with Spectrum 1 News, describing her instead as a “good person.”
“To me, I would say she did have nothing even close to having anything to do with their deaths,” Bauman told the outlet. “You know, at all. Because they were her world. She did everything for them kids. I mean, everything.”

Harmon told Spectrum 1 News his four children were set to arrive in Utah on Wednesday and he had planned to go camping and visit national parks with them. “I just feel so sorry I was not able to have an opportunity to sit there and love my children and hug them one more time,” the father told the outlet.
The Mechanicville Police Department has said they will announce more details about the alleged murder-suicide case once autopsies on the six deceased family members are completed.
