According to Hapeville Chief of Police Bruce Hedley, Lil Poppa was involved in a single-car accident on Interstate 85, just south of Hapeville. Authorities say the crash, while serious, did not render the vehicle inoperable. In fact, the car was still drivable after the collision — a detail that makes what happened next even more difficult to comprehend.

Police say that shortly after the accident, Lil Poppa called his manager, asking what he should do. The manager reportedly instructed him to meet at a nearby parking lot at the Hilton Atlanta Airport so they could assess the situation and figure out the next steps.

When the two met, Lil Poppa remained seated inside his car, speaking to his manager through the rolled-down window. Authorities have not disclosed what was said during that conversation. An off-duty police officer who was working security at the hotel reportedly heard the gunshot and immediately called 911. Emergency responders rushed Lil Poppa to Grady Memorial Hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Officials confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene.
