For Katie Piper, the familiar ITV star (currently featuring in The Great Escapers), family is everything. With her husband Richard Sutton, she is a proud mother to two lovely daughters, Belle (11) and Penelope (7). However, few realize that the couple once harbored a secret yearning: to have a third child.
The Christmas Spirit Drove the Final Decision
The turning point came in 2023, after Katie filmed the documentary Katie Piper’s Jailhouse Mums about incarcerated mothers. Listening to the emotional stories of the female inmates, witnessing their intense longing for their children, strongly rekindled her maternal instinct.
Simultaneously, age became a pressing factor. “I realized it was my last chance to have another baby, I was about to turn 40,” Katie shared in an interview with The Mirror earlier this year. “I was turning 40 in October, so I said to my husband: ‘If we want another baby, let’s start now.’”
The couple decided to proceed with their plan to expand the family.
A Fateful Blow from the Past

Unfortunately, fate challenged Katie once more. While actively trying to conceive, she unexpectedly faced a medical emergency.
Katie’s eyes, which were severely damaged in the horrific acid attack in 2008, required emergency surgery.
“You can’t be trying for a baby and also be having unexpected surgeries,” Katie revealed. Clearly, having to undergo a complex operation forced them to halt all efforts. Afterward, even though they tried again, “it just didn’t happen.”
After enduring over 250 operations since her 2008 attack, the psychological and physical toll on Katie was immense. She seriously considered In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), but the thought of enduring further hospital procedures and facing the emotional devastation if IVF failed made her hesitant. Ultimately, the speaker had to reluctantly accept giving up the dream of a third child.
Four-Legged Consolation as a Substitute
Despite having to close the door on having another baby, Katie still felt a void in her family. To fill this absence, she sought new joy: volunteering at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
And from there, her family “expanded” in a completely different way.
Katie happily announced the new member on Instagram, an adorable dog named Sugar, adopted from Battersea.
“We have expanded our family… Introducing Sugar,” Katie wrote alongside a series of photos of the pup. “The girls have wanted a brother or sister for so long and we wanted to make this happen. Our gorgeous girl came from @battersea Dogs & Cats Home and we are so happy to make our home, her new home.”
With Sugar’s arrival, Katie Piper found a new sense of fulfillment and joy, proving that love can come in many forms. She also made sure to thank the Battersea team for their incredible rescue work.
