“We’re going to charge you with the murder of Bridgette.”
Those are the words a NSW police detective said to a 14-year-old girl who had killed 10-year-old Bridgette Porter.
In an interview room, the teen sits silently and listens as police reveal her fate.
What happens next made the most unthinkable situation unbearable for the family of little “Biddy”.
Her killer was found guilty of murder. But due to mental health reasons, she was not held criminally responsible.
Later, they would learn, the 14-year-old — who cannot be named because of her age — was allowed out for day release after just three years in a secure mental health facility.
Biddy’s parents, Dominic and Rebekah Porter, also only recently had a suppression order overturned that prevented them from publicly discussing the horrific event that shattered their family.

Speaking this week, after four years of fighting to overturn the suppression order, Mr Porter said: “The suppression order that was apparently there to protect us did f*** all, it did absolutely nothing to protect us.”
He told A Current Affair that the order “protected the perpetrator and her family” and “that’s all it’s done”.
The program aired a short clip of the police interview with their daughter’s killer. In it, the teen sits inside a room surrounded by police. She is silent as she is told she faces a murder charge for killing the little girl — somebody who was close to her.
Mr Porter says he cannot get the police interview (which you can watch above) out of his head and that he is “overrun with anger”.
As part of the process that found the 14-year-old not criminally responsible, the Porter family is required to attend a six-monthly review of the killer’s mental health state.
An inquest into the killing and how it was handled is about to begin in NSW.
News.com.au previously reported details about the moments after Biddy was murdered in Gunnedah, rural NSW.
The killer was cold when interviewed by police.
That reporting included police bodyworn camera footage that captured the moments after the 10-year-old’s brutal death.
“Do you understand what you have done?” an officer asks the girl after she made startling admissions.
“Yep,” the girl says calmly.
“How do you feel about that?” the officer asks.
“I don’t feel anything,” the girl responds.
The NSW Supreme Court in 2021 placed prohibitions on the media publishing any details of the injuries suffered by Bridgette.
The court heard that in the days and months leading up to the killing, there were numerous warning signs after the 14-year-old exhibited bizarre behaviour.
Her thoughts are captured in diary entries, snippets of which were released after a judge found she carried out the killing, but wasn’t criminally responsible because of mental illness.

A statement of agreed facts tendered to the court said that prior to the horrific incident, the 14-year-old had not seen a psychiatrist or psychologist, though was awaiting an appointment to see a psychiatrist in Sydney.
The young girl was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia and dealt with under the Mental Health Act.
Her family members recalled a happy and bright child, however about four years before the killing she began exhibiting worrying and violent behaviour, court documents said.
She told people around her about “a voice in her mind” that “told her to do things”, as well as a face that she would see in the dark with a “big smile or sinister grin”.

Speaking to A Current Affair this week, Mr Porter revealed that he has lost his job and suffered significant mental illness, including a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
He tried to take his own life, he told the program.
“I couldn’t do it anymore, I just wanted to be with Biddy,” he said.
He said a big part of why he spiralled was that details of his daughter’s murder was for so long suppressed.
“People don’t even know Biddy existed,” he said.
“They don’t know what happened to her … it was the least publicised murder (in) Australia.”
