The body of a mystery man found in a car parked in bushland in northern NSW in 1999 has remained unidentified for almost 27 years, but police have launched a fresh appeal to see if they can uncover the man’s name and history.
The body was found in a car parked in the bush 400m off the Gwydir Highway, about 60km east of Glen Innes, on Wednesday, September 1, 1999.

Police ruled that the death was not suspicious, but they were unable to identify the man as he had no identification on him.
The car, a beige 1984 Holden Commodore, had a Western Australia number plate but was not registered.
Police believe the man may have been travelling south, possibly from Queensland, before he died.
On Monday, February 14, 2000, detectives released an image of what the man is believed to look like.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with a tanned complexion, aged between 40 and 55 years old, about 180cm tall, with a medium-solid build, blue-grey eyes, grey hair, a beard, and a moustache.
He was wearing a pair of faded blue denim jeans, light coloured sneakers, and a blue and white chequered shirt with a grey nylon jacket.
Police are now renewing their appeal for information as part of Missing Persons Week, which runs from August 2 until August 8.
“We have revisited every available lead, but without a confirmed identity, this man’s story remains incomplete,” Detective Inspector Paul Fenwick of the Missing Persons Registry said.
“We are urging anyone who recognises the description, the vehicle, or the circumstances to come forward so we can finally give him his name.”
In general, he urged relatives of long-term missing people to come forward and take advantage of new DNA technology.

“Every unidentified person is someone’s family member, and every long-term missing person case represents loved ones still searching for answers,” he said.
“With more than 283 unidentified remains and 875 long-term missing persons cases on record, advances in DNA technology give us renewed hope.”
