While his witness tampering trial looms, rapper YNW Melly went viral with a mystery woman during a Houston Rockets game over the weekend.
A viral video circulating online shows the incarcerated rap star smiling on FaceTime from prison while the Houston Rockets played against the Portland Trail Blazers. The brief moment, captured courtside, reignited conversation around Melly’s case and the strange ways fame travels, even through concrete walls.
The clip spread fast across social media. An unidentified woman appears inside the arena, holding her phone toward the court. On the screen sits Melly, relaxed and smiling, seemingly locked into the moment.
Fans quickly spotted his face, turning a casual FaceTime call into a viral flashpoint. Some welcomed the sight, saying it was good to see Melly in positive spirits. Others questioned how the call happened at all.
That reaction exists because Melly’s legal situation remains unresolved. Born Jamell Demons, the Florida rapper was arrested in February 2019. Prosecutors charged him with two counts of premeditated murder.

They allege Melly orchestrated the killings of fellow YNW members YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy. According to the state, the deaths were staged to resemble a drive-by shooting. Melly has pleaded not guilty and continues to maintain his innocence.
His first trial ended without closure. In July 2023, jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.
Since then, the case has slowed amid legal disputes over digital evidence and multiple appeals. Melly has remained in custody throughout the delays.
The retrial is now scheduled for January 2027. That date places nearly eight years between Melly’s arrest and a possible verdict.
With that timeline in mind, the FaceTime moment hit differently. The issue was not Melly smiling. It was the access.
Prisons tightly control communication. Calls are monitored, recorded, and limited. Video calls exist in some facilities but remain restricted.
A live FaceTime call from a packed NBA arena raised eyebrows and fueled speculation. Online chatter pointed to contraband phones, preferential treatment, or weak oversight. Officials have not commented publicly.
The silence only amplified debate. For some fans, the clip showed Melly’s humanity.
For others, it highlighted how celebrity bends rules. Hip-hop has long wrestled with that tension, balancing empathy with accountability.
Melly’s future remains uncertain. His freedom, career, and legacy hang in limbo.
Until the court delivers answers, every glimpse of him will carry weight. Even a smile on FaceTime can spark a storm.
