“There Are No Words to Describe the Horror”: Family Owner Speaks Out After Stranger Is Buried in Their Crypt as Sister Battles Serious Illness

A serious administrative error at a council-owned cemetery in South Australia has left two grieving families facing even more emotional pain after a man was mistakenly laid to rest in a crypt that had already been reserved by another family.

The incident occurred at Salisbury Memorial Park, where a stranger was interred in a crypt that had been purchased years earlier for future use by members of another family.

For Anna Traino and her relatives, the mistake has been far more than a simple mix-up. According to the family, extensive plans had been made to ensure loved ones would one day be laid to rest alongside one another.

Traino’s sister and brother-in-law had previously purchased two crypts located near the resting place of Anna’s late husband at Salisbury Memorial Park. However, only weeks ago, they were shocked to discover that one of those reserved spaces had already been used for someone completely unrelated to their family.

Speaking to 7NEWS, Anna Traino described the emotional impact of the discovery.

“There’s no words to describe the horror and the disappointment.”

The situation has been especially painful because her sister is currently battling serious illness.

“My sister’s very sick,” Traino said.

“Her days are numbered. And she doesn’t know when it’ll be her time to know that someone’s already been in there.”

Salisbury Memorial Park is owned by Salisbury Council but operated by Adelaide Cemeteries, which has acknowledged the error and issued an apology to those affected.

In a statement, the organization said:

“An interment took place at the Salisbury Mausoleum in a crypt that had been pre-purchased by another family for future use.”

Adelaide Cemeteries added that it had offered its “sincere and deepest apologies” to the families involved.

According to management, strict procedures are normally in place to prevent such incidents. Following the mistake, the organization has launched a comprehensive review to determine how the error occurred and to ensure similar situations do not happen again.

Meanwhile, Anna Traino said both her family and the family of the man who was mistakenly buried are suffering emotionally.

“They’re both very, very distressed,” Traino said.

“You’ve already sealed it and you think that this is over, we’ve done our last thing.”

Management has stated that it believes a suitable resolution can be found without having to remove the remains of the person already laid to rest.

Nevertheless, the extraordinary mistake has reopened wounds for two families already coping with grief, illness and loss.

For Anna Traino’s family, the greatest pain is not simply that a mistake was made, but that the final wishes they carefully prepared for their loved ones no longer feel respected in the way they had originally intended.

What should have been a place of peace and remembrance for grieving families has instead become the source of fresh heartbreak, turning an administrative error into a tragedy that has touched many across Australia.
