For many athletes, the Olympic Games represent the pinnacle of their careers, etched in vibrant memory. Yet, for Britain’s Princess Royal, the 1976 Montreal Games left behind a peculiar, haunting void in her mind. During a nostalgic reunion at London’s Lansdowne House this past Tuesday, the 75-year-old Princess shared a candid and surprising truth about her recollections of those historic Games.
When Memory Becomes an Imperfect Mosaic

As the first member of the British Royal Family to compete on the Olympic stage, Princess Anne cemented her place in history. However, beneath that glory lies the shadow of a harrowing accident during the cross-country equestrian event, where she was thrown from her horse, Goodwill, after it became stuck in the mud at a jump. This traumatic fall left lasting, permanent scars on her ability to recall the event.
At the reunion, reflecting on that fateful moment, the Princess spoke plainly about the inconsistencies in her own memory: “I had a slight problem in that the bit I would like to remember, which is the cross country, I don’t.” She admitted her complete inability to reconstruct that pivotal moment in her mind, even though it was the centerpiece of her competition. With her characteristic wit, she added: “But every now and again I see it and think ‘oh ok’. I suspect Goodwill remembers it, but I don’t.”
Nevertheless, when viewing the Olympic experience as a whole, she remains philosophical: “It was an experience, and a lot of it was a good experience.”
Contradictory Recollections
Interestingly, in years past, the Princess seemed to hold much clearer memories of the event. In a message addressed to Team GB athletes ahead of the 2020 Games, Princess Anne reflected: “I do remember from my own Olympic journey the anticipation and excitement of stepping onto the Olympic stage. But also the single-minded focus on what you need to do.” Why her grasp of these memories has become more elusive over time remains an enigma.
Looking back at 1976, the fall at the 19th fence left the spectators—including the late Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and her siblings—in a state of absolute shock. Although she suffered a concussion so severe that she later described it as “the lights were on but there was no one at home,” she was remounted by officials to finish the course. That display of iron-willed endurance earned her immense praise from contemporary commentators for her “outstanding physical courage.”
The Specter of Recurrent Injuries
The life of Princess Anne has been marked by more than one brush with traumatic brain injury. In 2024, another serious incident occurred at her Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire, sparking a wave of anxiety throughout the Royal Family. Medical professionals indicated that the injury was consistent with a forceful impact from a horse’s head or legs.
Reflecting on the event during a visit to South Africa in early 2024, she confessed to having no memory of the moment of impact: “I didn’t remember a single thing.” This second accident fundamentally altered her perspective on life. She shared: “It just reminds you, shows you — you never quite know, something [happens] and you might not recover.”
She spoke further about the fragility of life after staring down such a threshold: “You’re jolly lucky… if you can continue to be more or less compos mentis, and last summer I was very close to not being. Take each day as it comes, they say. You are sharply reminded that every day is a bonus really.”
Perhaps the words shared by a source close to the Princess with The Times capture the reality most poignantly: her accidents were, in truth, “so much worse than anyone let on.” Behind a facade of steadfast strength and discipline, Princess Anne carries the quiet scars of a life lived at the edge of endurance.
