The latest developments regarding the case of the nurse who allegedly k!:lled her three young children

Lindsay Clancy has been accused of strangling and killing her three young children in January 2023.

The Massachusetts-based nurse and her husband, Patrick Clancy, welcomed three children together: daughter Cora and sons Dawson and Callan. However, after welcoming her youngest child, Callan, in 2022, Lindsay allegedly began developing symptoms of postpartum psychosis, per a complaint filed by her husband against her medical providers, according to the Associated Press.

On Jan. 24, 2023, Lindsay asked Patrick to get takeout food and something from the pharmacy. When he returned, Patrick found Lindsay on their lawn with injuries to her neck and wrists. Lindsay proceeded to tell him that she had tried to die by suicide and that the children were in the basement.

Patrick tragically found all three of his kids unconscious and they appeared to have been strangled. Cora, Dawson and Callan were all immediately hospitalized but died as a result of their injuries.

Lindsay, who was paralyzed as a result of the fall, was arrested and charged with the murders shortly after. She has pleaded not guilty and has additionally, alongside her husband, filed a lawsuit against the medical providers who treated her postpartum mental health issues.

The murder trial began on July 20 and is expected to include testimony from Patrick, per court documents previously obtained by PEOPLE. While prosecutors will argue there was “deliberate premeditation”, her attorney has argued that she should not be “criminally responsible” because of her mental health, per CNN.

Lindsay was raised in Connecticut and attended Quinnipiac University, according to NBC Connecticut. After graduating with a biology degree in 2012, Lindsay pursued nursing and attended MGH Institute of Health Professionals in Boston.

In the summer of 2013, Lindsay met Patrick, who was working at a telecommunications company in Boston, as he told the The New Yorker. They got married three years later in December 2016.

While Patrick went on to work for Microsoft, Lindsay became a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The couple became parents on Christmas Eve 2017 when they welcomed daughter Cora and had son Dawson about a year-and-a-half later. They added their last child, son Callan, to the family in May 2022.

Although Lindsay had expressed having anxiety before and after having her first two children, her mental health suffered after the third pregnancy. She postponed going back to work and was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and prescribed Zoloft, per The New Yorker.

By November 2022, Lindsay was looking into other medications for postpartum mental health issues. She struggled to sleep, eat and socialize and experienced terrors. Lindsay sought the help of several medical providers and postpartum mental health specialists and was prescribed various medications, including an antipsychotic.

By December 2022, Lindsay told Patrick that she wanted to be admitted to a hospital and told him, “I have thoughts of wanting to die, and I feel numb to them,” according to police records. She further expressed fears to her husband that she was having unwanted thoughts of harming their kids.

“We were told by doctors, ‘If she doesn’t have a plan, and if she’s disturbed by the thoughts, then they are probably just thoughts,’ ” Patrick told The New Yorker.

According to Patrick, Lindsay was admitted to an inpatient program at McLean Hospital in early January 2023 but was released after five days and given another antidepressant prescription. Patrick said that she appeared to be doing better by mid-January.

What happened on the evening of Jan. 24, 2023?

According to Patrick’s account, on the morning of Jan. 24, 2023, Lindsay told him that she was ”good” before he started work, and she cared for the children.

Around 5 p.m., Lindsay asked Patrick to pick up medication for their daughter from a pharmacy and takeout for dinner. Patrick returned to the house around an hour later and tried to go to the primary bedroom, but it was locked.

He immediately began to panic when he broke his way in and found blood on the floor and a knife. Patrick ran downstairs and saw Lindsay on the ground outside, and she told him she “tried to kill myself.” When he asked where the kids were, she told him they were in the basement.

Patrick called 911 and once the paramedics arrived, ran to the basement where he found all three of his children with exercise bands tied around their necks. He attempted to resuscitate Cora, while he was still on the phone with first responders, but she and Dawson were pronounced dead in the hospital later that night, while Callan died a few days later.

Lindsay’s trial — that could include 200 witnesses — began in Plymouth, Mass., on July 20.

Prosecutors have alleged that Lindsay displayed “deliberate premeditation” in the killings and that she was in a lucid state of mind before the murders, per WCVB.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague, the lead prosecutor, has said evidence shows Lindsay was of sound mind when she committed the murders. A search of her home and devices produced search history that included “ways to kill” according to authorities.

“Investigators are also aware that Ms. Clancy used her cellular telephone and her journal to document her mental state and her feelings about her children, in addition to keeping track of her medications, and researching ways to kill, which means that [it] is reasonable to conclude that Ms. Clancy would have used all formats and tools available to her,” an affidavit obtained by WCVB-TV, MassLive and The Boston Globe said.

Prosecutors alleged in court that Lindsay wrote she “resent[ed]” her two oldest kids in a note on her phone.

However, Lindsay’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, has maintained that his client was suffering from severe postpartum depression and undiagnosed postpartum psychosis. During a 2023 arraignment hearing, Reddington pointed out that Lindsay voluntarily committed herself to a psychiatric hospital just a few weeks beforehand and doctors were struggling to figure out the correct prescriptions.

“Our society fails miserably in treating women with postpartum depression or even postpartum psychosis,” Reddington said at the time, per CNN. “This is a situation that clearly was a product of mental illness.”

Reddington has argued that while she did kill her children, Lindsay should not be held “criminally responsible” for the deaths because of her mental health distress and “horrific overmedication.”

The strangulation charges were dropped a week before the trial, per Boston 25.
