A week marked by anxiety and dwindling hope has reached its most devastating conclusion. Authorities in South Carolina have officially announced the discovery of a body during the ongoing search for Elena Katherine Moore, a 39-year-old personal trainer who had mysteriously vanished last week. While formal identification by the coroner’s office is still pending, police have confirmed that the clothing on the body perfectly matches the attire worn by Ms. Moore when she was last seen.
The Final Traces of a Mysterious Disappearance
Elena Katherine Moore was last recorded at 9:17 PM on June 11, as she departed the Planet Fitness gym in Lexington. Surveillance footage captured the final known image of the woman: wearing an olive-green zip-up hoodie paired with black athletic pants, she was seen quietly walking toward a wooded area behind a nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
The search efforts were significantly expanded this past Wednesday, focusing on the woodlands near Lakeside Middle School, approximately a mile from the gym. Although investigators had previously stated they found no evidence of foul play and did not believe Ms. Moore was in imminent danger, the discovery of the body has completely altered the trajectory of the investigation.
Bizarre Behavior Before the Vanishing
The disappearance of Ms. Moore is unsettling not only due to its suddenness but also because of her erratic psychological state in the days leading up to the incident. Her husband, Brannon Slice, to whom she had been married for one year, affirmed that this behavior was “very out of character” for his wife.
Furthermore, a series of strange actions by Ms. Moore were clearly documented by residential security cameras at a nearby apartment complex. In the footage, the fitness instructor was seen wandering aimlessly and engaging in confusing interactions regarding residents’ food deliveries. Sarah Burleson, a resident of the complex, remains shaken as she recalls her encounter with Ms. Moore: “Something seemed very off and I really hope she turns up safe and sound.” Ms. Burleson also shared details regarding the unfortunate confusion at the time: “For the past week we thought it was a crazy Doordash experience. We have it set for no contact delivery so the food is to be set down take a pic and leave. When the ring camera goes off twice is when he [her partner] goes to answer the door and I click live on the ring camera and watch the interaction. We did not even know at first that the white woman was not our Doordash lady.”
Another resident noted that Ms. Moore appeared “disoriented about where she was or whatever she was doing.”
Warnings from Those Close to Her
This instability was also noted by Ms. Moore’s acquaintances. Lauren Beasley, an acquaintance, pointed out that the sudden silence from someone typically vibrant on social media was a worrying sign: “She is very active on social media so her going radio [silence] for the last month is out of character.”
Beasley also commented on the surprising reclusiveness her friend had exhibited recently: “She did not say anything personal about anything she was going through. She got married last year, but she didn’t say anything about her relationship or work or anything personal.”
At present, an autopsy is being conducted to confirm the identity of the body and determine the cause of death. The case remains an active investigation, leaving many questions unanswered regarding what truly transpired for this talented fitness trainer in her final hours.
