After a four-year hiatus following the conclusion of its debut season, the beloved Welsh psychological thriller “The Light in the Hall” has officially made its highly anticipated return. With the new subtitle “Still Waters,” this second season promises to deliver another challenging mystery, further cementing the series’ prestige on Channel 4.
A New Case in a Familiar Setting

Returning to the fictional town of Llanemlyn—a backdrop that has already left a profound mark on its audience—the drama this time focuses on the arduous journey of Rhys Owen, portrayed by Mark Lewis Jones. Having served two decades behind bars for the murder of his cousin, Rhys has finally been released and returned to his hometown. However, rather than seeking solace, he is thrust into a grueling legal and moral battle, driven by a fierce determination to uncover the truth and clear his name.
Accompanying this investigation is Caryl, played by Sian Reese-Williams, the only central character from the first season to return for the new installment. She will be the one directly peeling back the layers of mystery surrounding Rhys Owen’s past, where the line between guilt and truth remains obscured by the shadows of time.
Acting Milestones and a Special Connection
A significant highlight of the second season is not only the script but the addition of the talented Mark Lewis Jones to the cast. More notably, his decision to join the project stemmed from a close professional friendship with Joanna Scanlan, the star of the first season.
Reflecting on this serendipitous connection in an interview with Radio Times, the actor shared: “Joanna Scanlan is a friend.” He continued by describing his journey toward joining the project: “There are lots of people I knew in it, but in particular Joanna Scanlan’s a mate, and so I was supporting her in watching it, and I thought it was great. It was absolutely wonderful.”
Mark Lewis Jones also admitted that he had no prior knowledge of plans for a second series until he received the invitation: “I didn’t know there was going to be a second series, I had no idea about that, so I was just watching it as a punter.” When the opportunity finally emerged, he saw it as a perfectly natural progression: “So when it came along that they were doing another story from that world, it was great to think, ‘Oh, yeah it’s really ripe for it, isn’t it?’ It’s a great backdrop. So I’m thrilled actually, to be part of the Golau family.”
