A heavy shroud of sorrow has descended upon the suburb of Cabramatta in Sydney’s southwest, following a horrific traffic accident that has claimed the lives of two innocent children. The sudden and devastating loss of 5-year-old Katherine and her 14-month-old brother, Harry, is not merely a tragedy for one family, but a profound emotional scar for the entire local community. Amidst this unbearable loss, it is the extraordinary grace and humanity displayed by the children’s parents that has left many in awe and deeply moved.
A Fateful Moment at a Deadly Intersection

The tragedy unfolded at approximately 3:15 p.m. this past Wednesday, turning a quiet street into a scene of unimaginable chaos and grief. As their mother, 33-year-old Sok Ram, was walking her children home, a vehicle suddenly struck Katherine and the pram carrying little Harry. Witnesses at the scene recounted the harrowing efforts of local residents, who, without a second thought for their own safety, rushed to lift the vehicle in a desperate attempt to free the trapped child, while simultaneously performing CPR in a frantic bid to keep the children alive until medical aid arrived.
Despite the rapid response of emergency paramedics and the subsequent urgent transfer of the siblings to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, their injuries were far too severe to overcome.
The Anguish of the Survivors
The sudden silencing of two young lives is a pain that no words can truly capture. Standing outside their home in Cabramatta on Thursday, Sok Ram, overwhelmed by her loss, shared her heart-wrenching disbelief: “Why did my kids die? I hope (the car) would hit me, not my baby.”
Through tears, Ms. Ram explained that she had believed the driver was slowing down to allow them to cross the road safely, only for the tragedy to strike in a split second. Beside her, her husband, Vundy Tha—who was not present at the moment of the accident but raced to the scene upon hearing the news—managed to maintain enough composure to express his profound gratitude to the community: “I would like to say thank you for everyone … I wasn’t there, thank you to everyone.”
A Lesson in Forgiveness Amidst the Storm
Perhaps the most poignant aspect of this tragedy is the remarkable capacity for forgiveness shown by the grieving couple toward the 56-year-old driver, who was arrested following the crash and subsequently released. Mr. Tha explained that harboring blame would not bring his children back. He reflected, “Even the driver, I forgive him already. Nothing can change, you know? Nothing can change. I couldn’t get my kid back.”
Friends and loved ones have rallied to support the devastated family. Patrick Te, who organized a GoFundMe page to assist them, shared that Katherine had just received an award at her kindergarten and was excited to head home when the accident occurred. “A mother not only lost a child — she lost both of her children, her only two children,” Mr. Te stated.
Acting Superintendent Timothy Calman, who oversaw the police response at the scene, was visibly moved by the severity of the incident: “It’s probably one of the most confronting scenes that police come across, dealing with young children. It’s tragic circumstances for the family.”
As the police continue their investigation into the exact circumstances of this catastrophic event, the community remains in mourning. This loss serves as a devastating reminder of how quickly life can change and leaves behind an indelible impact on everyone who has heard their story.
