New York rocked: Teen tourist d!:es after being flung from a horse-drawn carriage!

A sightseeing trip that was meant to be a cherished memory in New York City’s Central Park has devolved into a horrifying nightmare after an 18-year-old male tourist lost his life in a tragic horse-drawn carriage accident. This heartbreaking incident has not only brought a premature end to a young life but has also ignited a fierce and widespread debate regarding public safety and animal welfare in the nation’s most vibrant city.

The Sequence of Events: From a Snapshot to a Catastrophe

The accident occurred while the victim—an Indian tourist identified as Romanch Mahajan—was enjoying the scenic greenery of New York with his group of friends. According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the tragedy began when the carriage driver stopped to take a photograph for the tourists. During that fleeting moment, the seven-year-old horse, named Sampson, suddenly became startled and fell into a state of panic.

Although the driver attempted to intervene, he was unable to regain control of the animal, which began to gallop forward at high speed. The carriage violently collided with another vehicle before tipping over, throwing the victim to the ground and inflicting fatal head injuries.

Reflecting on the chaos at that moment, eyewitness Tatianna Bresler (20) described the scene to the New York Post: “The horse got scared and ran super fast.”

Ms. Bresler, who immediately dialed 911 upon witnessing the crash, remains deeply shaken: “The immediate reaction was just like ‘oh my god, oh my god my god’ like covering my eyes because I thought maybe someone had gotten smushed or something.”

Suspension and Stern Warnings

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, emergency crews rushed to the scene to transport the victim to the hospital; however, tragically, he could not be saved due to the severity of his injuries. The other passengers on the carriage fortunately escaped physical harm. While the horse, Sampson, was reportedly uninjured, the driver has since been suspended pending a comprehensive investigation by city officials and relevant organizations.

Alexander Kemp, Vice President of the Transport Workers Union Local 100, issued a sharp critique regarding the driver’s decision to step away from the carriage: “It appears the driver was at least at arm’s length from his horse. This is unacceptable. A driver is not supposed to leave the carriage to take photos – ever. We support a full investigation.”

A Wake-Up Call for an “Outdated” Industry

This tragedy strikes at a particularly sensitive time, occurring just one week after another carriage horse, named Deniz, died in the same park after consuming a toxic plant. This string of distressing events has prompted animal rights activists and local politicians in New York to call for an immediate and total ban on the carriage trade.

City Council Member Shahana Hanif asserted: “These incidents are not isolated… End this outdated industry, and ensure a just transition for workers. New York can and must do better.”

Echoing these sentiments, Harvey Epstein added: “Time and again, we are seeing both horses and people suffer the consequences of an industry that poses serious risks to public safety and animal welfare. New York City can’t continue to ignore these tragedies.”

Currently, the city is deliberating the implementation of the “Ryder’s Law” bill, which outlines a timeline to cease the issuance of new carriage licenses and phase out this form of tourism entirely over the next two years, in an effort to prevent similar nightmares from recurring in the future.
