Netflix viewers have been left heartbroken after discovering a horrifying true crime documentary on the streaming service. Directed by Abducted in Plain Sight’s Skye Borgman, Girl in the Picture first premiered on the streaming platform in 2022.

Based on the books A Beautiful Child and Finding Sharon, the story follows the harrowing account of a young girl who was abducted.

Sharon Marshall was kidnapped and then raised by a man named Franklin Delano Floyd. Over two decades, she was raised as his daughter and later died in a suspicious hit-and-run accident in 1990.

The documentary follows the shocking events that occurred afterwards and the hunt to discover Sharon’s true identity.

The Netflix documentary synopsis teases: “In this documentary, a woman found dying by a road leaves behind a son, a man claiming to be her husband — and a mystery that unfolds like a nightmare.”

After watching the twists and turns unfold, when asked for recommendations for the most “horrifying” true crime documentaries on Reddit, a social media user suggested The Girl in the Picture, calling it “heartbreaking.”

“So sad for her life and her child’s,” another wrote. Someone else called it: “Meticulous, chilling, horrific,” adding: “Slowly, but surely, the horror of her life unfolds.

“This is one of the best and most well-constructed documentaries I have ever seen. The director tells the story in the chronology that the police and the FBI discover it. The result is the stomach-churning story of a sociopath and the damage he has done. See it because his victims deserve to have their stories told, but beware, that is disturbing.”

Another called it a “bombshell,” writing: “One of those stories that shocks you with every twist, it’s wild and almost unbelievable. A well-put-together documentary with relevant interviews and a smooth storytelling rhythm. Sad, poignant, and just incredible (in a really disheartening way).”

Someone else called it a “spine-chilling story”, saying: “I think this is one of those stories that will [live] with me for some time. It’s thought provoking, remarkable and chilling, what the poor young woman endured will quite literally break your heart.

“Nobody should have to suffer, endure, and experience what she did; she also seemed such a wonderful person. Very well made and edited, it flowed incredibly well. This really was a triumph, a story that needed to be told.”

Yet another wrote: “This is one of the saddest documentaries I’ve ever watched, and it is brutal in its depiction of events, and it will leave its mark on you. I actually wish I’d never seen it because the level of evil perpetrated here is incomprehensible. How a woman this smart, caring, and beautiful had to live this hellish existence and no one took action is soul-crushing.”

Director Skye Borgman, who is behind Sins of Our Mother and a producer of A Friend of the Family, has previously spoken about tracking down her true crime projects.

“My ideas come from all sorts of different directions,” she previously told Today. “There are a lot of times where people will contact me with an amazing story, just everyday people, but also networks or production companies might have a great idea that they’re looking for someone to put their creative head into.”

“So it’s really keeping eyes open 360 degrees to really see what’s out there and see what strikes me as a story that I want to be telling,” she continued.

“I’m open to telling stories that have been told before, but from a different perspective,” she added. “If I can tell a story that is very much about how somebody got through something or how somebody is now, that’s very, very interesting to me.”
