A TEENAGER was viciously bitten by a shark after dragging the animal onto a boat during a Memorial Day fishing trip.

The 17-year-old was injured off the coast of Galveston, Texas, on Monday afternoon after he and two others – including his dad – hauled the beast onboard the vessel.

Law enforcement alerted the Coast Guard Command Centre after the teen suffered a brutal bite to the arm while the fish was on deck.

They said: “He’s been bleeding for two hours, they’ve placed a tourniquet, but he’s bleeding, lost a lot of blood, barely conscious.”

His dad reacted instantly, applying a tourniquet “almost immediately” in an effort to stop the bleeding before heading back to shore.

But the situation escalated when the boat lost power in the Gulf, leaving the injured teen stranded at sea, Fox 61 reported.

Galveston Island Beach Patrol was called to the scene at around 3.30pm, responding to reports that a victim had been bitten two hours earlier and was still onboard a vessel experiencing mechanical issues.

Rescue teams, including the Coast Guard, reached the group and applied a second tourniquet to the teenager’s arm as they worked to stabilise him.

Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen said initial reports of a shark attack were misleading.

“All the reports were that it was a shark attack, but it wasn’t; [the shark] was actually brought onto the boat and the shark ended up biting [the teen],” Fullen said.

The teen, who was said to be alert, was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch after reaching land.

His condition remains unclear.

It is believed the bite may have occurred as he attempted to remove a hook from the shark’s mouth.

Fullen added: “It’s a possibility getting in the water you may get bit by a shark. It’s like going into the Everglades, you might get bit by an alligator.”

Shark incidents in Texas are rare, with just 19 recorded since 1911, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History.

The dramatic ordeal comes as a separate shark attack left a honeymooning tourist fighting for his life in the Maldives.

Borja Garcia Sousa, 31, from Alicante, Spain, was swimming in an area known as “shark alley” near the island of Kooddoo when he was viciously mauled.

His wife Ana watched in horror as the shark tore into him during what was meant to be their first holiday after their wedding.

“With one bite, it took all the flesh from the knee down”, said a member of Ana’s family.

The injuries were so severe that doctors were forced to amputate his leg due to the “irreparable damage” caused by ruptured blood vessels.

Sousa remains in intensive care at ADK Hospital in Male.
