Plans to undo the multi-million dollar renovation of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s former home in the U.K. are reportedly in the works.

On May 27, The Sun reported that plans are in motion to “reverse” the roughly $3 million worth of renovations made to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

The makeover was initially paid for by the Sovereign Grant, the British government’s taxpayer-fueled fund that covers royal activities, and repaid by Prince Harry, 41, after he and Meghan stepped back from their royal roles in the U.K. in 2020.

According to The Sun, several options are being reviewed regarding what to do with the house next.

The outlet alleged that one idea is subdividing the property or splitting the residence again.

Frogmore had allegedly been two semi-detached homes before Queen Elizabeth gave it to her grandson Harry and his bride Meghan, 44, as a wedding present when they married in May 2018.

“It’s been empty for three years…It would draw the line under Frogmore Cottage’s controversial history and return it to the pre-Meghan and Harry era,” a source said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex called Frogmore Cottage home from April 2019 to March 2020.

The couple officially moved in following a major renovation and shortly before the birth of their first child, son Prince Archie, 7.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward told PEOPLE that Frogmore Cottage was “pretty dilapidated” when they inherited it and about $3 million was spent renovating it into a family home. The major refurbishment included upgrades for Frogmore’s heating, electrical, gas and water main systems, plus a redesign of five dorm-style units into a five-bedroom residence, and it took about six months to complete.

A Buckingham Palace source told PEOPLE that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex privately paid for “anything movable” or in the cottage gardens as they made the home their own.

“All fixtures and fittings were paid for by their Royal Highnesses,” the source said. “Curtains, furnishings — all that would be paid separately, paid privately.”

Prince Harry and Meghan also paid for anything deemed too expensive for the public to provide, such as an upgraded kitchen, bathroom, fitted wardrobes or flooring. The Sun alleged that the overhaul included a $6,700 copper bathtub, decor by a Soho House designer and vegan paint, though speculation that the revamp included a yoga room was debunked.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said goodbye to Frogmore Cottage when they stepped back from their royal roles and moved to the U.S. in March 2020. They forged a fresh start and bought a home in Montecito, California, that summer, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 4, was born in June 2021.

The couple retained Frogmore and stayed there when they returned to the U.K. in June 2022 for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee festivities, a trip on which they brought Archie and Lili.

Prince Harry and Meghan again used Frogmore as a base during the late Queen’s funeral events in September 2022, and the world got glimpses of their U.K. home in the Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, released that December.

In March 2023, PEOPLE confirmed that the couple was “requested to vacate Frogmore Cottage,” which fell several weeks after the publication of Prince Harry’s revealing memoir, Spare.

They officially vacated Frogmore Cottage in June 2023, and a source said that they were “matter-of-fact” about the situation.
