“It’s a bit of a mess at the moment”: The scene of a truck rollover has left a swarm of “angry bees” escaping from 360 broken boxes

A truck carrying hundreds of bee hives has rolled over on a Queensland highway, leaving a swarm of “angry bees” surrounding the wreckage.

The small truck was travelling westbound on the Warrego Highway at Womalilla, in the state’s southwest, when it left the road and rolled over about 3.30am on Wednesday.

The driver, a 39-year-old Meringandan man, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mitchell Hospital for treatment.

The crash also left hundreds of bee hives damaged, with bees escaping from about 360 broken boxes, according to a Queensland Fire Department spokesperson.

One lane of the highway was closed following the incident.

State Emergency Service volunteer Wayne Bryant, who was directing traffic at the scene, described the situation as “a bit of a mess”.

“We’ve got a pile of destroyed hives and a swarm of angry bees in about a 10m radius around the truck,” Bryant told ABC.

“It’s a bit of a mess at the moment.

“I’m about 30 metres from it, and there’s a cloud of bees around the truck.”

He urged motorists travelling through the area to keep their windows closed.
