Meghan Markle is all about making the holidays special for her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

In the Duchess of Sussex’s new Netflix special, With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, she shares an emotional revelation about her children’s Christmas traditions.

After decorating a Christmas tree (“I love having a tree up,” Meghan said), she prepared Advent calendars for her kids. The white and red calendars were customized with the children’s names, “Archie” and “Lili,” with pockets containing numbers for each day leading up to Christmas.

“I’m writing, ‘I love you because you’re so kind,’ ‘I love you because you’re so brave,’ ” Meghan said about the affirmative words she penned in her signature calligraphy as she filled the pockets with small notes and goodies.

“Hopefully, we have these for quite a long time. A tradition has to have a beginning,” she said.

Meghan, 44, shares her son Prince Archie, 6, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 4, with her husband, Prince Harry, and in a 2024 interview, she said that the holiday season “gets better” every year for her family.

“I love the holidays,” the Duchess of Sussex told Marie Claire last year, explaining that Archie and Lili were then ages 5 and 3, “so every year it gets better.”

“Every single holiday is a new adventure,” Meghan said then, adding that it was important for her kids to experience the “magic” of traditions like preparing “carrots for the reindeer” at Christmas.

Audiences got a peek at a special plate for that elsewhere in the episode, where Meghan put frosted cookies on a ceramic plate that read, in part, “carrots for the reindeer.”

With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration premiered on Netflix on Dec. 3 and followed seasons one and two of With Love, Meghan on Netflix, her lifestyle series on the streamer.

Exclusively speaking to PEOPLE earlier this year, Meghan opened up about how much it meant for Prince Harry and their kids to visit her on set, as the show was not filmed at their Montecito, California home.

“Archie did the [filming clapboard]! Sweet moments,” she says. “They would also come with my husband and visit me on-set, and I loved that my children were able to watch me working and see the balance of that and understand what Mama does and is working to create and share. It was really special because up until then, they hadn’t seen me at work.”

With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration is now streaming on Netflix.
