A brutal shark attack has occurred at Piedade Beach in Recife, leaving an 11-year-old boy with permanent injuries. The boy is currently in stable condition after emergency surgery, but he has unfortunately lost a leg.

A Terrifying Moment The incident took place around 1:40 p.m. on Sunday while the boy was playing at the beach with his uncle, Aldemir Jose, and two other children. According to Aldemir, he had just left the water to let the children continue swimming when the tragedy struck.

Recalling the moment he faced the danger, Aldemir said, “We were all in the sea before the attack and I had just left the water and left the kids in the sea”. He continued, “Then I heard a strange noise and when I turned round all I could see was blood. I didn’t think twice and raced into the water to get my nephew out”. In a state of panic and pain, the boy clung to life, pleading with his uncle: “He was conscious and just kept begging me not to let him die”.

A Dangerous Hotspot Piedade Beach has long been listed by local authorities as an area with a high risk of shark attacks. Despite warning signs installed along the beach, incidents continue to occur. According to Danise Alves, executive secretary of the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT), the area where the boy was attacked is clearly marked with signs informing the public of the risks and providing information on when to avoid swimming.

This is the 83rd shark-related incident recorded in Pernambuco state since 1992, with 24 of those incidents occurring at Piedade Beach alone. As of early 2026, this is the third shark-related incident in the state, including a fatal attack at Del Chifre Beach.

The boy is currently being cared for at the Hospital da Restauracao in central Recife after receiving immediate assistance from lifeguards and paramedics. State officials are once again urging tourists to strictly follow swimming bans to prevent similar tragic consequences.
