Meghan Markle reportedly had a surprising reaction when she was told she would be in line for a royal title after her wedding to Prince Harry, a new book has revealed. Harry and Meghan were bestowed the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex following their decision to tie the knot in Windsor on May 19, 2018.

According to a new biography William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, a royal staff member revealed that Meghan’s excitement over her new title was “palpable”.

They told Mr Myers: “She started saying ‘I’m going to be a Duchess, can you believe it? I am going to be a Duchess’ – she was almost leaping out of her seat.”

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, it was revealed that Meghan gets announced at various events by her royal title.

During her previous appearances, including at a film premiere in Utah and at the World Mental Health Day Gala in New York, the mother-of-two has been announced as ‘Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’.

Meghan and Harry have both been criticised for continuing to use their Sussex titles since stepping down from royal duties in 2020.

Speaking to Fox Digital News, British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard previously said: “It’s bizarre and highlights that Meghan attaches enormous importance to her royal status.

“Meghan will cling to her Duchess of Sussex title because it gives her a sense of importance. The title remains useful for Meghan’s business activities, particularly in the United States. It gets people talking and keeps her in the limelight.”

“One thing is for sure — she certainly keeps giving comedy writers fabulous content. They must be having a field day.”

British royals expert Hilary Fordwich also told the publication: “This was very intentional. Instructions were given, so it appears she was making a point – sadly for her, probably not the point she intended. The use of her royal title is beyond pretentious. It’s hypocritical at best.”
