A court has heard a good Samaritan set upon by a gang of children is not expected to survive, with a magistrate describing his injuries as “unsurvivable”.
The 60-year-old Asian grocer from Sunshine, in Melbourne’s west, rushed to help when a fellow business owner was being robbed before he allegedly became the target of a violent attack by five youths.
The mother of the youngest accused attacker — who is just 12 years old — sobbed in court as a magistrate refused to free the boy on bail.
“Within hours or days, he will die,” the magistrate told the court.
Three boys and two girls are now charged with affray and intentionally causing serious injury. The court heard it’s “inevitable” the charges will be upgraded.
Police labelled the crime “abhorrently violent”, telling the court it was done for notoriety among their peers.
A 13-year-old boy has been bailed, but police are urging the court to keep the three others behind bars, saying the “community would be outraged” if they were freed.
Shadow Police Minister Brad Battin questioned the ongoing violence, asking: “Why are we seeing people in hospital in critical conditions across this city just this weekend?”
Battin spoke as another elderly Melburnian remained in hospital fighting for his life.
The 68-year-old from Heidelberg West sustained life-threatening injuries when he was run over by his own car on Saturday night while trying to stop it from being stolen.
He remains in a critical condition in the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Police have found no trace of the vehicle, nor the alleged thief.
In Sunshine, meanwhile, locals are still devastated by the alleged attack on one of their own.
“He loved his wife so much and he’s got two kids. He worked hard,” a fellow shopkeeper said.
The group will face court again on Friday.
