During the trial related to the killing of rapper Julio Foolio, testimony from Bryan Herrington — the former stepfather of Sean Gathright — offered a completely different perspective on the childhood and upbringing of the man accused in the shocking case.
Taking the stand, Herrington recalled first meeting Sean in early 2009 in Okinawa, Japan. At the time, Sean was just 3 years old. He explained that both he and Sean’s mother served in the U.S. military, with Herrington in the Air Force and Sean’s mother in the Marine Corps. According to him, Sean grew up in a disciplined military household that frequently relocated and was exposed to different cultures.

Herrington described Sean as a “vibrant,” “inquisitive,” and exceptionally intelligent child. He remembered Sean constantly asking questions, eager to learn, and quick to absorb new information. Academically, Sean was considered an outstanding student. The family had even discussed the possibility of allowing him to skip a grade after moving to North Carolina because of his advanced academic abilities.
In addition to excelling in school, Sean was deeply involved in sports. Herrington testified that Sean especially loved football and basketball. Family trips, camping outings, and travel experiences were also a regular part of his childhood. Herrington said he always tried to create opportunities for the family to experience life outside military bases and learn about different cultures.
During questioning, Herrington was also asked about the home environment and how Sean was raised. He firmly stated that there was never any abuse in the household. According to him, Sean’s mother handled most of the discipline, while he mainly served as a supportive figure who offered guidance and advice when needed.
One of the most notable moments in the testimony came when Herrington revealed that he lost contact with Sean after divorcing Sean’s mother in 2020. Even so, he said he still cared deeply about Sean and hoped they could reconnect in the future. In court, he expressed a desire to support, mentor, and guide Sean again if given the opportunity.
Herrington’s testimony quickly drew attention online because it painted a picture that contrasted sharply with what many people might expect from someone connected to such a serious criminal case. Many observers said the testimony opened a broader conversation about upbringing, environment, and the life circumstances that can shape — and sometimes change — a person over time.
The trial in the killing of Julio Foolio is still ongoing, with multiple witnesses continuing to testify in an effort to give jurors a fuller understanding of the defendants and the circumstances surrounding the case. Among those testimonies, Bryan Herrington’s account stood out as one of the most emotional, as he reflected not only on memories of a bright and energetic young boy, but also on his lingering hope that Sean could one day find the right path again.
