The long weekend is fast approaching, and while the sun beckons, many of us are more than happy to settle in on the sofa and binge-watch series we may have missed. Thankfully, Prime has the perfect option for those looking for such a show.

House of David is a two-season historical epic that focuses on the rise of King David, who became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Israel according to the Bible’s Old Testament. The show tracks David’s rise from a humble shepherd’s boy, to slaying the giant Goliath, before becoming the head of the House of David.

The second season of the highly-rated thriller was made available to all Prime subscribers back in March, after initially being available only to those with the Wonder Project add-on. Although a third season is yet to be confirmed, given its reception, it’s likely that more episodes will be on the way in the future.

A synopsis for the first season reads: “The once-mighty King Saul falls victim to his own pride; at the direction of God, he anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king; David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfil his destiny, navigating love, loss and violence.”

Despite the show being rooted in biblical verses, the show’s creators have emphasised that House of David is meant to be enjoyed by people no matter their religious background, and fans have routinely praised its action-scenes, cinematography and storyline.

Reception

Fans have loved the show since it started airing in 2025, as one enthused: “It had great action, excellent character development, and even if you know the story, excellent timing to add suspense. The actor playing David, and all of the actors have been superb.”

A second added that they had been “hooked instantly” while a third posted: “This series is absolutely amazing, a must watch. A truly exceptional series. I hope it gets to season 10.”

Fans have been full of praise for the show

Meanwhile, a fourth penned: “I really thought this show would be corny, but to my pleasant surprise it has kept my attention each and every episode. It’s made me forget that I know how David’s story ends,” and a fifth noted: “I found Season 1 of House of David to have a spark of something special. The characters were deeply developed, the scene construction exceeded that of most high budget shows, and the story way gripping, never slowing down.”

However, in a negative review for Variety, Alison Herman commented: “It is, however, wooden and cheap-looking, humourless and dull. House of David doesn’t force its creative team’s beliefs on viewers. It also doesn’t give those who don’t already share them any reason to buy in.”

Who stars in House of David?

The series saw the screen debut of Michael Iskander, who plays the titular David, while he’s joined by the likes of Ali Suliman (Jack Ryan), Indy Lewis (Industry), Ethan Kai (Killing Eve), Oded Fehr (The Mummy), Yali Topol Margalith (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder), Davood Ghadami (EastEnders), Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel) and Aury Alby (The Chef).
