A case that has deeply shaken Italian public opinion has reached its legal conclusion, leaving behind profound questions regarding the boundary between legitimate self-defense and brutal, premeditated vengeance. Cinzia Dal Pino, a 65-year-old businesswoman of social standing in the coastal city of Viareggio, has officially received an 18-year sentence of house arrest following her decision to use her luxury Mercedes GLE SUV to crush a man who had stolen her handbag in September 2024.
A Shocking Sequence Captured on Camera

The events that transpired on the streets of Viareggio that evening were meticulously documented by surveillance cameras, producing a harrowing record of extreme cruelty. After being mugged by 52-year-old Noureddine ‘Said’ Mezgui, instead of seeking help from authorities, Dal Pino chose to administer her own brand of “justice.”
The footage captures the moment she steered her £80,000 SUV directly into the victim. Even after Mezgui had collapsed onto the pavement, the aggression did not cease. She repeatedly reversed and accelerated, crushing the victim under the two-and-a-half-tonne vehicle. What followed further incited public outrage: she proceeded to run over him two more times while he lay writhing in agony. Once the victim was completely motionless, she calmly stepped out of the vehicle in her stiletto heels, retrieved her bag, and drove away from the scene, leaving the man to draw his final breath alone.
Contentious Arguments in Court
Throughout the trial for “aggravated voluntary homicide,” defense attorney Enrico Marzaduri endeavored to convince the court of his client’s initial intent. He argued: “She didn’t want to kill, but to stop the man and get her bag back. Inside it were her documents and house keys, and she was fearful he would have committed other crimes.”
Dal Pino herself offered explanations during her initial panic-stricken statement to police: “He had threatened to kill me with a knife. I was scared. I didn’t mean to kill him I just wanted my belongings back. There were important documents in my bag and I couldn’t call the police because my phone was in there.”
However, prosecutors dismissed this narrative entirely, asserting that no knife was ever discovered on Mezgui’s person. Rather than calling for emergency services, Dal Pino reportedly returned to the restaurant where she had been dining to return a borrowed umbrella—a display of composure that local media described as chillingly detached following a fit of rage.
The Voices of the Victim’s Family and the Intervention of the Church
The family of Mr. Mezgui, who had resided in Italy for over two decades, could not mask their devastation upon seeing their loved one stripped of his life in such a barbaric manner. His sisters shared their horror on the Moroccan channel Chouf TV, stating: “Not even an animal is killed in this way. We ask for justice for our brother, Cinzia Dal Pino must remain in prison.”
Beyond the victim’s family, the local Archbishop, Monsignor Paolo Giulietti, felt compelled to speak out against the moral decay reflected in the case. He not only condemned the act of murder but also cautioned against the public sentiment that attempted to frame the incident as self-defense: “Other than self-defence, the video shows astonishing behaviour. How do you drive your car over a person’s body several times? How could we think that a quiet and esteemed lady, a capable entrepreneur, could carry out such an action? Evil wins when it makes us evil: those who rejoice because this episode would be an episode of self-defence demonstrate how evil wins. I say, let’s not rejoice, this is not self-defence, and it is not justice. Nothing, absolutely nothing can justify murder. Not just because we live in a state of law. But because every person, in every situation they find themselves in, has the right to live.”
The Sentence and the Aftermath
While the 18-year term serves as a formal punishment, the decision to allow it to be served as house arrest has sparked a wave of public controversy. Under the court’s terms, Dal Pino must strictly adhere to conditions at an approved residence, subject to rigorous police monitoring. The court’s decision to grant mitigating circumstances and drop the aggravating charge of cruelty remains a major point of contention for those seeking justice for Mr. Mezgui. The saga concludes with a tragic outcome for a family and serves as a somber warning about the consequences of human loss of control in moments of fleeting fury.
