A Detroit family is mourning an unimaginable loss after siblings Ray Johnson, 33, and Takoria “Rita” Johnson, 27, were killed in what authorities believe was a targeted shooting outside a home on McKenna Street on Wednesday afternoon.
The deadly incident has left relatives in shock and searching for answers, as investigators continue working to determine what led to the fatal attack that unfolded in broad daylight.
According to early details provided by police and family accounts, the shooting occurred while the siblings were seated in separate vehicles outside a relative’s residence. Authorities say the attack appears to have been deliberate, though no suspect description has been publicly released.
Family members described Rita Johnson as a warm and kind-hearted woman who was always willing to help others. They say she was not directly involved in any conflict, but may have been unintentionally caught in circumstances that escalated beyond her control.

“She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” a relative said, suggesting that the violence may have stemmed from an ongoing dispute that had been circulating on social media prior to the shooting. While the exact connection remains under investigation, relatives believe the incident may have originated from an online disagreement involving other parties.
Investigators have not officially confirmed the motive but are actively examining whether a social media dispute played a role in the events leading up to the attack. Police have emphasized that the shooting appears targeted, raising concerns that the victims may have been specifically located and approached.
In a tragic detail, Rita’s one-month-old child was inside one of the vehicles at the time of the shooting. The infant was not injured and has since been safely reunited with family members.
Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area and appealing for witnesses as part of an ongoing effort to identify those responsible. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
The case has deeply shaken the Detroit community, not only because of the loss of two siblings, but also due to concerns that an online dispute may have escalated into real-world violence.
As the investigation continues, the family remains in mourning, struggling to process the sudden and devastating loss. One relative summed up the emotional weight of the tragedy in a simple statement: “I didn’t know what to think…”.
