The strained relationship between two of Hip Hop’s most powerful former partners—Jay-Z and Damon Dash—has entered a new, tense chapter. Following Jay-Z’s performance at the Roots Picnic, where the rapper delivered cryptic lyrical responses aimed at those who have criticized him over the years, Dame Dash did not hesitate to push back with shocking remarks on The Art of Dialogue.

Once part of the legendary trio alongside Kareem “Biggs” Burke that built the Roc-A-Fella Records empire in the 1990s, Jay-Z and Dame Dash were once considered symbols of success and self-determination for the Black artist community. However, their “thick as thieves” image is now a thing of the past.

In his latest comments, Dame Dash expressed confusion over billionaire Jay-Z’s decision to continue performing at his current age, suggesting it was a compulsion rather than a passion. Dame Dash stated: “I would have preferred the version of Jay that would have said something clever. And that’s not the version of Jay that I would have ever signed. I felt bad because I was like, it must be embarrassing for him to now have to be on that stage, not the same version of himself, and still have to work at that age, ’cause he has to.”.

Dash went further, claiming that Jay-Z had intended to retire since the Reasonable Doubt album era. He emphasized: “for him to have to come out 20 years later, I just felt kinda like, embarrassed for him a little bit.”. Beyond career critiques, Dash also targeted Jay-Z’s personal style, disparaging the rapper’s new hairstyle after he combed out his locs, and suggested that the public should question and mock this look.

Although Dame Dash has maintained his harsh stance, his remarks have been met with a wave of public backlash. Many argue that a billionaire continuing to contribute to music reflects artistic passion rather than the financial necessity that Dash implies. This incident once again underscores the growing distance between the two “architects” who once changed the face of the Hip Hop industry.
