King Charles made an emotional appearance at today’s Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph in London. The 76-year-old appeared moved as he took part in a two-minute silence to remember the sacrifices of the many servicemen and women who gave their lives in service to their country.
The monarch, who was wearing his Field Marshal ceremonial frock coat, was the first to lay his poppy wreath on the Cenotaph, before being followed by a wreath laid on the Queen’s behalf by her equerry. The King was also joined by fellow royals, including Prince William and Prince Edward.
Queen Camilla, Princess Kate and Duchess Sophie were also in attendance as they watched the service from the Foreign Office balcony.

The wreath laid by the King closely resembled the one produced for his grandfather, King George VI. The wreath featured 41 open-style poppy petals and is tied with a ribbon using the colours from His Majesty’s racing silk – scarlet, purple and gold. After paying tribute, the King saluted the Cenotaph, Major Ollie Plunket. He then laid a wreath on behalf of Queen Camilla.

Prior to his reign, the late Queen Elizabeth II laid a Wreath at the Cenotaph every year of her reign, until 2017, when she began to watch the service with other female members of the Royal Family and asked the now-King Charles to lay a wreath on her behalf.

King Charles was seen closing his eyes as he began to look emotional whilst saluting. After leading the procession, Big Ben chimed at 11am, marking the start of the two minutes of silence.

Prince William joined senior members of the Royal Family, leading the nation in the Remembrance Sunday commemorations at the Cenotaph. His appearance came just hours after flying back to the UK from Brazil, where he was for his environmental initiative, the Earthshot Prize. Due to his travel day, he didn’t attend the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday.
