A harrowing crime has shaken the community of Cayuga Heights, claiming the life of a young high school student who was standing on the threshold of a bright future. Local authorities have now finalized formal charges against the sole suspect in this heartbreaking case.
The Brutal Attack

According to official reports from law enforcement, police were dispatched to 709 Triphammer Road at approximately 2:00 p.m. on May 23 following an emergency call regarding a stabbing incident. Upon arrival, officers identified the victim as 19-year-old Breanne Keane. Despite frantic efforts to provide emergency medical aid and her subsequent transport to a local trauma center, the young woman ultimately succumbed to her severe injuries.
Cayuga Heights Police Chief Jerry Wright confirmed in a press conference held on Monday that Damien Stewart, a 20-year-old man, is the sole suspect currently in custody for the killing. Stewart has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held at the Tompkins County Jail while awaiting further legal proceedings. Under the law, a second-degree murder charge typically indicates an intentional act of killing that was not premeditated. Chief Wright added that the investigation remains active as authorities work to clarify the full details of the incident.
The Anguish of a Bereaved Father
Breanne Keane was a promising student who was eagerly preparing to receive her diploma from Lehman Alternative Community School this June. In the depths of his grief, her father, Mr. Matt Keane, shared his final memories of his daughter with Syracuse.com on May 25.
He recounted, with profound sorrow, a brief final phone conversation he had with her at approximately 1:20 p.m. on May 23—less than an hour before the tragedy unfolded. During that call, Breanne had mentioned to him that “she had a friend over.” Faced with the overwhelming loss, Mr. Keane expressed his utter bewilderment at the malice directed toward his daughter: “I did not understand why anyone would harm my daughter.”
The Unfulfilled Aspirations of a Young Life
Breanne Keane was a highly independent young woman. She resided in a private apartment with support from the Learning Web, a non-profit organization in Ithaca dedicated to helping young adults develop self-sufficiency and contribute positively to society. According to her father, she split her time between Ithaca, where he resides, and Syracuse, where her mother lives.
In a social media post on May 24, Mr. Matt Keane reflected on the bright plans his daughter had, which were tragically cut short at the age of 19. She had intended to pursue higher education at Tompkins Cortland Community College following her high school graduation. Furthermore, the young woman held a deep love for animals and aimed to study canine training at SUNY Cobleskill. Those beautiful dreams have now been permanently extinguished, leaving behind infinite grief for her family and friends.
