Kate Middleton and Prince William are celebrating St. David’s Day early with a trip to Wales.

The Prince and Princess of Wales visited the country on Thursday, Feb. 26, ahead of its national day on March 1, which honors St. David, the patron saint of Wales.

Prince William, 43, and Princess Kate, 44, twinned by wearing daffodil pins in a thoughtful tribute. Daffodils or leeks, St. David’s personal symbol, are traditionally worn on the feast day to celebrate Welsh heritage.

The royal couple began their day at The Hanging Gardens, a community space focused on resilience, creativity and sustainable living. There, they met with volunteers involved in the hub’s café, performing arts center, indoor market, community gardens, kitchens and workshops.

Their schedule also includes stops at Oriel Davies Gallery, a contemporary public art gallery, and Open Newtown’s Hafan yr Afon, a community hub operated by the social enterprise that manages more than 100 acres of local parkland.

The outing in Wales coincided with the final day of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s humanitarian trip to Jordan, a rare moment when both couples were carrying out high-profile engagements on the international stage at the same time.

William and Kate’s connection to Wales runs deep. Just one day after Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022, King Charles gave his first speech to the nation as monarch, where he announced officially that his eldest son and daughter-in-law were now the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Even before they received the titles, the couple had a special connection to the nation, as they lived there during their time as newlyweds.

The visit also reflects what appears to be a growing tradition. They similarly made trips to Wales ahead of St. David’s Day in 2023 and 2025.

Last year, the royal heir also celebrated the holiday by sharing a video greeting in Welsh.

The away day in Wales follows a tumultuous week for the British royal family, with the arrest of the former Prince Andrew on Feb. 19.

The Prince and Princess of Wales made their first joint appearance after the scandal when they attended the EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Feb. 22. On the red carpet at the event, an attendee shouted a question at the pair in relation to the recent events: “Is the monarchy in peril?” However, William and Kate appeared to ignore the question and continue making their way inside.
