EXCLUSIVE: Alex, 33, has just been crowned winner of The Floor and taken home $200,000 but it’s not the biggest prize he’s won this week.

When Alex randomly stood on The Floor grid next to rival Antonia for the five days the competition was filmed, he didn’t expect for her to offer the ultimate gift – to be surrogate for him and his partner Brett.

In yet another twist of fate, their first embryo transfer is happening within just days of the finale airing, timing that Alex said feels “totally surreal”.

After bonding on the set of The Floor, Alex and Antonia, who are both Aussie expats living in the UK, made their journey home together.

“We talked about what I’d do with the money, and I mentioned my husband and I were trying to start a family,” Alex said.

“I guess that put the idea in her head.”

Alex recalled Antonia asking about the surrogacy process but assumed they were just chatting saying, “I really had no idea she was thinking about being our surrogate.”

After their journey home together, Antonia spoke with her husband James. The couple are already parents to five children: Julian, Reuben, Bernard, Ziggy and Ivor – all boys!

“[James] thought she was insane because she just got back from the show and wanted to do this for someone she’d just met and he’d never met,” Alex laughed.

“But literally the next day she reached out to me about it and we just kicked off the process of trying to figure out if it was legally possible and if we were crazy – which we are but we’re going to make it work anyway.”

After that Alex, Brett, Antonia and James immediately started on the eight-month-long process of jumping through administrative and medical hoops including mounds of paperwork and legal, doctor and counselling appointments.

Alex said his $200,000 prize money will help with a lot of the expenses involved in starting a family through surrogacy.

In both Australia and the UK it’s a criminal offence to pay a surrogate for carrying a child, beyond what are defined as reasonable expenses.

“We will be covering all of Antonia’s medical expenses, tests and other support she needs through her pregnancy. There’s a lot there the prize money is going to make possible,” Alex explained.

Alex said while he and partner Brett had been saving for a pregnancy via surrogacy before his time on The Floor, his experience on the show changed everything for them.

“Antonia coming forward really sped things up and the prize money has made the possibility of a second pregnancy real too.”

While Alex and Antonia’s situation is a unique one, they want to use their platform to advocate for surrogacy.

“Antonia had never considered surrogacy until she met me. It’s crazy in a way because she’s perfect for it. She’s highly empathetic, she’s had positive experiences with all her pregnancies and births,” Alex said.

“So just the general awareness that that you can be a surrogate for someone you don’t know as well.”

As Alex, Brett, Antonia and James continue on their path forward they also want to advocate for legal change across Australia and the UK to make surrogacy easier, better and more accessible.
